LED Bulbs

#1 Post by ajsamuels » Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:54 am

Came across these on ebay, has anybody tried using them on a Dolly in place of the weedy conventional indicators etc, are they any good?
Bulbs must be e-marked to be legal on our roads. Havn't found any LED ones yet that are but would be glad to hear if anyone knows of any.

I would like them in my brake lights to give those behind me that fraction of a second earlier warning.

Can be quite a saving in power if you add the lot up, 4x6w side plus 2x21w brake plus 2x21w side all reduced to bugger all would go well on the way to powering upgraded headlights without having to change the alternator.
I've been looking at getting the 24 LED bulbs for red lenses. I'll probably get a pair in the new year for my track car.

Had LED's on the Busa.

But please note.
They do not give the same angle of light,
When behind/Infront move to one side and you'll notice what I mean.

Yes they look good less power taken than normal bulb's but please be warned.

That's just my opinion.
The only LED'S I have now are the Heater control on the Sprint and the Dash on the Calibra.

Don't think any aftermarket leds have been approved for road use so wouldn't recommend them. Still they lat ages, side repeaters just gone on the Focus and it's a pig to change!

I have a set of stop & tail on the TR, huge improvement on the originals but a word of caution on indicators. I remember reading somewhere that LED bulbs only draw around 80mA, hence their low power consumption but it's not enough draw to make the old style relay click, therefore the indicators at the car won't work .

There are special LED light relays available but I'm not sure if these can be modified to fit a Sprint.

Might be worth checking out with someone like Stafford Vehicle Components who sell LED bulbs.

I'll get me anorak....................
Thanks for the views chaps.
Interesting, no mention of legality or otherwise on that guy's listings. Might try asking the question to see what he says.

I think the point of the E-mark is that they are tested to ensure they throw the right amount of light in the right directions. So no narrow fields or view.
Who is going to check? Plod when the bloke who rammed you from behind swears blind your brake lights weren't working.
PC had an article this month about upgrading lights, LEDs were mentioned as a suitable upgrade but no mention if E certs or stuff.

Seems to make sense to get better lights with less power requirements.

Legality

#11 Post by Silvery » Fri Dec 02, 2005 12:35 am

Local motor factors used to have some LED bulbs. I was interested in getting some (lower draw so less drain on the alternator and therefore engine, longer life) but these had no E mark. I asked about this, and was told "they must be legal if we're being supplied with them". Interesting to note they are no longer selling them...

I'm sure I remember hearing BMW were using LED bulbs, do they use hte standard fittings? If so then there must be approved for road use ones kicking around somewhere.

Without going out in to the rain to take a look at the side light bulbs on my wagon does anyone know what LED bulbs would be a direct replacement. A nice bright set of sidelights would give it a bit more of a stance in the dark <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
