Help! Dim and Slow Functioning Indicators - Ideas Please
The indicators on Molly have become very slow functioning and extremely dim, to the point where I cannot take her out at all ! Today has been spent doing the following:

Cleaning and checking all the connections.
New earth strap
New Battery
Cleaning and checking the indicator stalk

The bizarre thing is, is that the hazard lights light up like Blackpool illuminations (as do all the other lights), and they flash merrily away like good 'uns, so it can't be the flasher unit.

Another point, is that the little green indicator arrows on the dash board don't want to work either, but again, everything else on the dash does.

Ideas please, as I'm desparate to get her up and running for the Broadlands show which is two weeks today

Re: Help! Dim and Slow Functioning Indicators - Ideas Please
I'd say flasher unit too. Anybody know which cheapo generic one fits? Or which slightly more expensive one we should fit?

Re: Help! Dim and Slow Functioning Indicators - Ideas Please
with combination of a selection of terminals, bit of heatshrink, cutters, crimpers and if you're feeling creative, possibly even soldering iron and a bit of vero-board, the possibilities are endless...

most BL '76-'80 ? new standard one shouldnt cost more than a few £
But if it was the flasher unit, then surely the hazards wouldn't work, and they do?? And the indicators do flash, but very slowly.

im pretty sure the hazards work off a different unit......
(correct me if im wrong)....if you have a indicator bulb blow, the other one on the same side will flash really quick but if you put your hazards on they return to naormal speed..its a safety feature!! Im agreeing with the other guys on here and saying its the flasher unit gone for you indicators.......
And on top of that it's about the easiest and cheapest thing it can be.

I think there are two units. Try finding both and swapping them over....if not. I could probably get you one in time.

1979 Blue 1850 Back on ebay after the winning bidder refused to pay
1978 Inca Sprint Engine out
1978 Yellow 1850 - probably only good for spares unless anyone is interested in it
1977 White sprint in bits
1973 Mimosa Sprint Project car - being done by someone else!
There are indeed two different units and they are not interchangeable as one has to flash 2x21W and the other has to flash 4x21W.

Most 3-terminal flasher units will work, mine is from a Nissan. Bit of trial and error to establish which connection is which and you'll need to add an earth link from the 3rd terminal to ground but pretty simple really.

I believe the club do a kit?
flashing!
The club do indeed supply a modern flasher unit. It takes only a couple of minutes to fit and comes with instructions. The only additional thing you will need is a short length of cable for the earth.

There are indeed....
2 different flashers.
The hazard does indeed show that the bulbs and earth are all fine. The warning lights in the dash do make a difference, although not great, and being open circuit will cause a slow down in the flash rate. New bulb required.
The indicator flasher unit is the small box shaped thing in a clip under the rev counter behind the dash. Replacements tend not to be boxed shaped and dont fit the clip so try and find anything 70's and BL in a scrappie and get a replacement.
The other thing is that these are voltage sensitive and tend to flash at the correct rate only when the engine is running and the alternator has upped your voltage to about 14.
Re: There are indeed....
Jon,

We tried the indicators with the engine running (and it does run at 14 voltage, so the alternator is okay), but they were still slow, and we also replaced all the bulbs .

Guys,

It does sound more and more like the flasher unit, as most of you have said, so I will try and source one locally this week (in between doing that "work thingy" that we all unfortunately have to do ), and we'll go from there.

Flasher unit replacement
I recommend that do not get a direct replacement as
a common problem with the original type is if you have a heavy electrical load on such as rear window heater this will cause the voltage available to drop and this in turn slows up the flasher.

The replacement that Malc has found is not affected by low voltage and it is simple to fit. It just needs an extra earth wire.
