Starting problems on an auto gearbox car

#1 Post by tasusi » Sat Dec 06, 2003 8:11 am

For a while now my car has not started in park and now has begun to be a bit dodgy in neutral as well. Could this be just a dodgy wire/contact? Or something far more sinister? Thanks, Katy.

Katy,

The starter inhibitor switch on the side of the gearbox is prone to getting covered in all sorts of crud both from the engine and thrown up from the front wheels. Simple enough to remove from the car but the switch itself is sealed so its hard to clean.

I did the one on my Stag by dipping it in some cellulose thinners which get inside the switch and clean it all up. Give it a good shake when you take it out of the thinners and put it somewhere warm for 24 hours to allow evaporation before refitting.
Switch

#3 Post by Silvery » Sat Dec 06, 2003 2:06 pm

I can only start the auto TC in neutral, cause I haven't adjusted the linkage properly yet... And of 2 boxes, one has a perfect switch, the other (which is the one currently fitted..) has very grotty contacts on the reverse lights, not too great on the starter ones either.

Worth cleaning the switch up, but might also be worth making sure it's all adjusted properly too? It's fairly straightforward to adjust the rod going from selector lever to box, just be careful to make sure the clips go back on properly!

Thanks for the advice. Have removed and tried to clean switch and checked the linkage adjustment. It's still the same though so have removed switch again to try and clean it again. If it still doesn't work I guess we will have a go at splitting the switch as a new one from rimmers is £60!!!!!!!!!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Do cellulose thinners do something that petrol does not? And how do I test the switch to be sure that it is the problem? What do the 2 'S' terminals and 2 'R' terminals mean? I am pretty sure that it is the switch though as I used to be able to start in both N and P and I have no reverse lights. I also live on a dirt track. Thanks, Katy.

The two terminals marked "S" are the starter inhibitor loop and the pair marked "R" are the ones for the reversing lights. If the car is getting hard to start, also check the multi-plug next to the bellhousing.

Cellulose thinners are really good at getting into all the nooks and cranies and also evaporate without leaving a residue. Worked for me.

To test, put a test meter onto both of the "S" contacts and move the switch back and forth to obtain a reading, also do the same with the "R" contacts to test the reversing lights.
Switch

#8 Post by Silvery » Sun Dec 07, 2003 8:32 pm

If you get no luck from it, I might have a spare switch soon (when I sort that engine out!) if you want? It's a bit naff on the reverse light contacts, but works OK apart from that. It's on the box that's in the car at the mo, but I'm sure I'll find time to take it off before I've got the petrol pennies together <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

I had one of the clips fall off the linkage a while ago - Had to stop for fuel as well, so in the petrol station I poured water all over the exhaust to cool it down, climbed under the car, connected everything up in park, and kept trying until I could get it to start and get into drive without the rod falling off... Hence it being a good idea to be careful with those clips!

The Dolly front loom on my brown 1300 came off an auto - All I did on that (as a temp measure) was take the 5 pin socket the switch wirting plugs into, and stick a wire in the holes for the two starter connections (red and white I think). You could always do that for the time being, so long as you always remember to put the car in park or neutral before firing it up!

Inhibitor Switch

#12 Post by Triumph1300 » Wed Mar 03, 2004 7:50 pm

Talk nicely to the TDC advertising officer, phone number in Dolly Mixture, who has 2 or 3 new inhibitor switches as part of a stock of spares purchased by the club. Priced very reasonably
Thanks. I have been ignoring it for ages now. I have just spent money on new rear suspension, which is great because I now go round corners in one fluid(ish) motion instead of a series of wobbly and unnerving jerks. I think the inhibitor switch should be the next thing.
I've been far too busy and skint recently to get on with the engine job on my TC (but that 1300 is going in when I get round to it!), but if you still need a switch by the time I do it, I'll have that old one spare still <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Got a Mini to run around in at the mo, and still no luck getting hold of a cheap hoist, plus all the other stuff I'm up to my neck trying to sort out, so don't hold your breath wating <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">
