Uprated alternator

#1 Post by knightrider150 » Wed Jan 28, 2004 9:20 pm

hi all..

i dunno if its my batt thats going but my car cant deal with all the extra stuff on the car....theres the leccy fan kit and the uprated headlamps. plus the stereo system.

when i drive for say more than 15 miles in the dark. by the time i am home the battery is as dead as a dodo.

but when i drive for a long time in the day light the car is fine. its only started doing this since i added the load of the leccy fan....could the batt be on the way out?

and what could i do. because i cant see how i am gonna get a bigger battery in there?

thanks

james

Put a higher output alternator on it......or turn your music down and stop driving around with your front fog lights on all the time!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:">

They certainly do!

Just make sure its got the right pulley on it though as some use grooved drivebelts rather than normal belts.

Best to get a new one anyway. Mine was about £50.

I have a Merc 130 amp Alternator,
Pity it's not on the engine yet,
Don't worry I'm working on it,

Bearing in mind I have a 100amp Merc Battery in the Boot
Assuming the alternator mounting bolt comes out to the rear. If it's in from the front then the rad needs to come out...
Why not....

just get the existing alternator tested. It should be quite capable of running headlights fan and hrw at night. The clue is the volmeter. If it cant do 14 V with everything on its duff....
WIth just the ignition on it will do 14 V as its only trickle charging via the warning light circuit IIRC
Ive got another one which is charging fine even though the light stays on...must be cos its in the Rover.
Lucas well known stateside as Prince of Darkness...
The Lucas A127 monty alty might need a slightly bigger drive belt, an 850mm IIRC.

If the bolt is through from the rad side, cut the head off <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> make sure you have spare bolt though cos you can't nip down Tesco's at 4 on a Sunday for a new one <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

How often does your fan come on? If it's set up properly it should be off most of the time when the car is moving.

i admit i had set it to come on when its just over half way because watching the temp go 3/4 the way up THEN cut in was too much for my poor heart
