exhaust tape
exhaust tape
Does anyone have a view on exhaust tape wrap?

Specifically - does it reduce engine bay temperatures, is it worth bothering with, is it easy to "fit" and does it stay fitted?

Thanks
exhaust tape
Have never used the stuff but i have a sprint manifold race coated inside and out with a ceramic coating it makes a huge difference to the under bonnet temperature and to the temperature of the rocker cover.
Cost was about a hundred pounds and it now is a matt black colour instead of the usual rust.

Where did you get this done as its something I've been looking at and your testimonial has pushed me even further that way.
Exhaust Tape
I'ved used the tape on my Sprint (2 Manifold's),

Damm axkward to fit and you need to tie the tape in place I used Stainless Steel Locking Wire,
I would say it does make a Difference,

Buy the kit with the Locking Strap should make it a bit easier?.
Manifold Wrap
Most race cars use this, I have photographs of a Ram Hart 1500 Turbo F1 car (900ish BHP) wrapped to just beyond the turbocharger. The wrap keeps the heat inside the exhaust and thus increases gas velocity within the system, improving the savenge effect. Keeping under-bonnet temperature under control is another benefit. My boss wrapped the tubular manifolds on his 4.2 MGBGT V8 and it stopped all his fuel vapourisation problems and improved the performance noticeably.
Re: Manifold Wrap
Further to my nate night reply the ceramic coating was applied to the manifold as on a sprint i think you'd find it rather difficult to use exhaust wrap tape due to the advanced design of the manifold (all they could fit) but the temperature difference is quite amazing but for maximum performance the downpipe needs doing as well or exhaust wrap can be used quite simply there. Cam coat web site lists the prices so you can pay your money and take your choice, one thing to note though is that if you want the manifold race spec (coated inside and out) they will only do so on a new manifold.

Re: how
I had a feeling the ceramic coating option would be raised. My Sprint and I <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)"> are now in Western Australia and my attention is being focussed on cooling now that the day temps are around 30-40C.

My issue is more about the general temp under the bonnet rather than performance improvements.

I take the point about how difficult it would be to wrap a Sprint manifold. Has anybody tried it?

The ceramic coating solution I quite like. The only problem is getting the part here !

And are new manifolds still available?

Thks, Mark

ceramic coating
the ceramic coating provides heat insulation as its a very poor conductor of heat, the race coating i had done coats both the inside and the outside to double the effect but don't think that the manifold will be cold to touch it still gets very hot but remains a lot cooler than without it.
i run it on a sprint with a piper group 2 rally cam and dellorto's even after some exciting driving the down pipe now gets far hotter than the manifold as it's yet coated the difference is very noticeable. This has made it apparent that the down pipe needs coating as well especially as for maximum performance the first few feet should be done and the sprint manifold is hardly very long.

new manifolds
Rimmers still sell them i bought a new one for the purpose and smoothed it out prior to sending it for coating to get the maximum gain.
Manifolds
Thanks for the reply Alan. Very helpful. I'll have a little think.

As I'm so lazy, what did rimmers charge you for a new manifold? If there are any people on the forum who have one but don't want to fall foul of the advertising rules then just post a message saying that you have one sitting around that you are thinking of coating!

I'll do the rest.

new manifold
rimmers list one at just over 80 quid.

Re: new manifold
Does anybody want to organise a bulk order? ie from Rimmers (or other source if you have one) and then bulk coating order?
Count me in.
I need it done fairly quickly though.

Just got off my fat a4se and looked at the rimmers dolomite parts sale cataolgue that ended on the 13th December. They were doing sprint manifolds for £50 all in. (218475) usual price £69.99 ex vat.

The catalogue number to quote was DPS3 for the discount. Maybe they will honour it???

I take it you are volunteering to do the co-ordinating Mark?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
