I need some advice on the end float on my sprint. At this time we have the gearbox out to replace the clutch and on checking the crankshaft we find we have a float of approx 12 thou.
My question is should I fix now or leave, is replacing thrust washer a job that requires engine removal. If not any secret methods from bottom end.
thanks Denis

crankshaft end float
Hair's breadth!
Hi Denis, End float is specified as being between 3 and 11 thou' so you are literally less than a hair's breadth out. Difficult call, i guess if you don't do it now you'll be doing it sometime. You can do it from beneath the car; I've e-mailed you a jpeg of the relevant page from the workshop manual. Alun

Its well worth....
Taking it out and replacing all bottom end shells in one go. I suspect that new thrusts will bring it back in to tolerance. Its then much easier to join engine and box and put it all back in together. You can do all the horrible bits like the manifold to downpipe joints and starter motor and while its out do your rack mountings,,,use polybush ones and give it all a good clean.
If you have the hoist it wont even take a lot longer. Lying on your back undoing a dirty old sump is no fun and neither is the oil in the face as you take off the bearing caps...
Thanks for all your replies, looks like best option is to do now as half the work has been done.
Hope to get a lot of driving after all this.
I have another question has anyone in the club sold their Sprint to a fellow named Hugh in the US Seattle area. as I heard through my club (Vancouver) here that he had one
