Cylinderhead studs

#1 Post by JeanClaude » Mon Jun 06, 2005 4:43 pm

I am sorry to ask a question which has been treated before, but I think that I read somewhere that the cylinderhead studs should be left in oil overnight before the fitting of the head.
Is that right and what is the reason for doing it.

Thanks for your help.
Yes, I think it is from the Triumptune/Moss Book. I think it was only relevant to later spec studs. A strange one cos I wouldn't have thought the studs were very oil absorbant, but guess there must have been a reason <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> .

Go with Jonners. You do not want any oil on the stud as it will carbonise with the heat and then be a bugger to get out in the future.

Never got that idea, it is also in vintage car manuals, metal is not porous so whats the benefit.
I always copper slip, its perfect for not sticking

Copper grease

#7 Post by JeanClaude » Wed Jun 08, 2005 10:27 pm

Thanks for your opinions. As I use copper grease on nearly every bolt during the rebuild I will also coat the studs in copper grease so that they will not rust in the future. 4 of the 5 studs on my engine are so rusty that I ordered new ones ....
