Timing the 'head

#1 Post by Dolomite16V » Sat Jun 18, 2005 11:18 am

Well, I've got the head back having had it skimmed and pressure tested etc..., I have refitted it and torqued it up but want to be ultra sure that the timing is right before proceeding. It was set up by the shop the same as when removed with the timing marks parallel but I'm not sure if the position of the cylinders has remained the same (when I was accesing the sprocket bolts). Is there a certain default position in which the grove on the pulley should be? - I presume 0 degrees is TDC, I really don't undertsand this very well. Any help gratefully recieved, I'd be vexed if the pistons crashed into the valves through my incompetence<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D">
Cheers
Alex.

I doubt anything would have moved, but check that the timing marks are in line (groove on camshaft with groove in front bearing cap, the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley lines up with zero on the timing scale and that the rotor arm in the distributor points to the lead that feeds no1 (front) cylinder. That all you need to do.

Just make sure the cam chain sprocket bolts are done up to the correct torque and the tabs folded up. Always wise to turn a rebuilt engine over by hand (socket on crankshaft pulley) first.
