1850 compressions

#1 Post by dollysteve » Fri Sep 16, 2005 4:18 pm

I have just done the compreesions again on my 1850, the results were: 4- 150psi, 3- 150 psi, 2- 120 psi and 1- 150 psi, can someone tell me what the compressions are meant to be I seem to have misplaced my manual, obviously number 2 is a good bit down on the rest, could this be the cause of my nasty running problems?????

150 sounds pretty good. I think a sprint should be around the 160 mark and the 1850 runs slightly lower compression. Generally, as long as the compressions are pretty close together it shouldn't be a problem, but a 30psi difference is probably something that's worth investigating.

Almost definitely the cause. Pour some oil down the bore and test again to see if it momentarily increases (rings), but from other symptoms I'd suggest valve trouble of some description.
Good luck with your studs!
I have a spare head off the car already if you need one...

One of Mine has even compressions and still idles like a camel. If yours is that far adrift on one pot it will be rough....prolly a valve...
It would smoke if it was a ring and you'd get crank pressure.
Thanks chaps. I had an idea that it was the cause of my poor running but thought it wise to check it out with some of you more experienced custodians. I tried the oil down the bore trick and it didn`t make a blind bit of difference. Head it is then!!!!
Alun, thanks for the offer but I have the TR7 engine to go in and also a spare TR7 head and also an 1850 engine kicking about in the garage, of course there`s also one on the auto if need be. Looks like the transplant might come sooner than I thought.
