Spin on oil filter conversion
Spin on oil filter conversion
A big thanks to all those who've posted warnings about spin on conversions in the past, I think you just saved my engine.

I bought a spin on conversion of them in the men-in-green-tights town back in feb, I was going to fit it and do a full service today. Thanks to the warnings on this forum I took the time to trial fit the conversion on my spare block so I would know what I'm doing once under the oily engine. Either I'm being incredibly dumb or I've got the wrong conversion.

Here's a photo of my spare block:

I have most definately removed the old seal from the slot pointed to by the yellow arrow. The difference between the bottom of that slot and the sealing face pointed to by the red arrow is about 4-5mm.

Here's the spin on:

The difference between the two sealing surfaces pointed to by the arrows is 9mm. Mate the two together and you get this:

The red line shows a gap of about 5mm between the o-ring and the surface it is supposed to seal against. This would increase with the outer seal fitted.

Ben mentions something being a tight fit on his gotchas page. Nothing is a tight fit in my kit.

So which is it?
a) I'm being dumb.
b) I've got an odd spare block, the spin on is likely to fit fine on the one in my car.
c) I've been sold duff parts. Again.
How many people would have fitted that and not noticed, I wonder ?? Look forward to an answer as to wether the block or the adaptor is right.
I am also converting my 1850 at the next oil change, so will watch with interest.
Pretty damn sure I wouldn't have noticed if it dived straight under the car <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

When I bought the car the PO (or rather the PO's 'professional' garage) had lost the spring and pressure plate from the oil cannister. One of the first things I did when I got it was change the oil and filter. Since I knew no better I just dropped the new filter in the bottom of the can and put in back on to rattle about like a pea in a drum. The ends lasted a few thousand, the above would have had much the same effect.
Re: conv
The old engine in my Sprint had a spin-on conversion fitted, so when i dropped the new lump in, was going to change it over.

Would it fit? Would it hell, looks almost exactly like yours Tinweevil.

So i just fitted a standard oil filter.

Maybe the tolerances on the block casting were poor? who knows....

But, as TW has said, take care when fitting the spin-on conversion, it may look like it fits...but does it really???

Poor Instructions
You should find that the conversion casting is in two parts and the inner part slides up so the O ring seals when you tighten with the hollow screw. The outer casting lip seals to the large seal in the block by pressure exerted by screwing the filter on.
I know the casting looks like one piece but it isn't - honest. Try it and see.
Re: Poor Instructions
As Stagger says - the inner part should move up to touch the block. There are two pieces there.

I've given up on this type of spin on conversion - I'm now going to use a remote filter and I've had the old bowl turned down just as a cover, the remote filter is in line from the transfer housing using a Mocal 5/8" kit.
My old Sprint engine had one of these fitted - I wonder if thats what buggered up the oil system now after reading this!
spin on
I found great difficulty in understanding the instructions when fitting my spin on adapter. I found oout very easily that it is made in 2 parts with the middle bit sliding up. In my case I found it very easy to tighten it too far and the whole thing separate meaning I had to start all over again. Now i'm not sure whether it is right so will probably take it off and check. Still not sure whether it will make it easier to change the oil as i'm still convinced the whole adapter unit will come off complete with the filter when I remove it thus somewhat missing the point. doesn't seem to have affected the oil pressure though so maybe it is right afterall?

Oh dear, on closer inspection it looks like it is indeed option a)
Thanks for putting me straight guys. I've added two magenta arrows above to show the join between the inner and outer alloy parts. They are a damn good fit to one another.
