A Sprint/1850 Water Pump Question
Does anyone know if it is possible to install a water pump in the Sprint or an 1850 wrong so that it would leak slightly from the drain hole? <br>
I mean, once you turn the impellor and the pump goes down into position, that's basically it, right. And if the pump leaks from the drain hole, then the pump must be bad, right?<br>

My car leaks about an expansion bottle's worth of coolant every hour it runs. The cover's on right and tight, so it isn't coming from the gasket. I did not tap the pump down, so I didn't damage the graphite seal. But I did change impellors from 6-vane to 12.<br>

I didn't think that you could interchange the 6 and 12 vane impellors. I thought the cover wouldn't seal properly.<br>

I belive that there are two types of cover. One will allow fitment of either, the other will only be suitable for a 6 vane. Too hazy to remember the exact details. What year is your car?<br>

I did also switch to the 12-vane pump cover.<br>
I guess I just must have got a bad new pump. It was in a Unipart box, which may explain it.<br>

Waterpump
I had the same problem when I changed from 6 vane to 12 vane impellor with a rebuild kit for the pump.<br>
The pump didn't stop leaking even after 1500 miles of use.<br>
So I got a new unused pump of Ebay and changed the whole setup but used the old pump drive as the teeth match the original jackshaft with slight wear.<br>
That pump leaked slightly in the beginning but went watertight after about 150 miles. So I thought I finally had a good setup that should last ...<br>
Now the car has done some 2000 miles with a trip to the UK and one week ago the pump seal when bang again ...<br>
This time the water just flows out even when the engine is not running!<br>
So this time the pump will be rebuild by a friend who owns a garage where they mainly work on classic cars.<br>
If then again the pump will not last, the car will be sold or I will convert from Sprint to 1500 ccm engine .....

1. Flatness of onderside of impellar is critical, even on a NOS pump which could have sat in damp atmosphere for years<br>
<br>
2. Incorrect tolerances for under cover gaskets putting undue pressure on the pump, bigger gaskets than required will not hurt, thinner ones will.<br>
<br>
3. The bush in the block (not part of rebuild kit, but it should be) being worn allowing lateral movement of the pump spindle<br>
<br>
4. Ovality of the jackshaft bearing allowing the whole shebang to move laterally (new block reqd<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :x --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/sick.gif ALT=":x"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> )

Best bet...
is to rebuild your old 6 vane pump with a new seal kit.<br>
Lately I've had a better design of seal with its own internal bearing that doesnt rely on the grahite ring against the underside of the impellor, which was always a bit iffy I reckon. I think this seal is available form Robsport or Fitchett's.<br>
Or you could use the same seal on the 12 vane unipart pump.<br>

I got a rebuild kit from Fitchetts and had my garage fit it. It seems to have stopped all my leaks.<br>
