You'll be lucky to get any oil pressure at the blanking plug hole in the head. The head is fed from the rear camshaft journal and only lets a little pulse of oil through every revolution. If the cam journal is starting to wear, which it will be, you'll get nowt up into the head.

The external feed kit is money well spent, I've been using one on my OHV engine for almost ten years now.
Oil feed to rockers

#17 Post by Richard the old one » Fri Sep 01, 2006 9:13 pm

Hi Jod.

I am glad you have been reading the discussion board and have provided us with the detail of the system. I was talking to Malcolm England last night and he said that you were the person to talk to at the TDCIR if I had not sorted out my problems by then.

It was about 12 years ago that I stripped and rebuilt three 1500 engines and I could not remember the details of the rocker feed system. Now that you have provided the details it has all fallen into place.

I was beginning to think that I had two engines with partially blocked rocker fed systems but that worry has now gone away.

I did pick up an external rocker fed kit from Moss Bros Bristol branch today and while I was there they told me that they could provide a restrictor if the larger oil feed to the rockers reduced the engine oil pressure too much. The restrictor is just a connector with a smaller hole in it. I may go down this route as changing from a very limited oil supply to one a normal engine oil pressure seems to be major jump.

Recently I checked the rocker shafts on three of my 1500 engines. They had all covered approx 100k miles. One I did not replace, as there was very little rear. Another I did replaces as it had some wear. It was only the engine that had the blocked oil feed that needed to be replaced. Hence the reluctance to go to a bigger oil supply at full engine oil pressure.

I will obviously be able to keep myself entertained in the garage out of the wife’s way for hours.

Many thanks again Jod for your help

Sorry to drag this up - but how easy is it to fit the external feed?

Just want to know if it's a PITA before I pick one up

Lewis - the external feed kit is a doddle to fit, it should take no more than 5 minutes (literally). If you wish to run an oil pressure gauge and warning lamp you will need a T piece. These are also available from Moss, or Europa or Demon Tweeks etc.

Like Jod says, it is money very well spent.

Richard - I too used the Moss kit, with a similar saving over Rimmers. It is identical and is even sourced from the same supplier!

It is worth mentioning that after fitting the external feed you can experience an increase in oil consumption, usually due to worn valve stem oil seals. The "new" influx of oil to the area as a result of fitting the kit exacerbates the effect of any wear to the seals. You can change the seals without removing the head using the "rope trick" as has been detailed elsewhere on the board in the past. There is a very thorough explanation of this in the front pages of Rimmers catalogue.

Alternatively, combine fitting the kit with a decoke and general head off clean up.

I hope this helps.

oil to rocker shaft

#20 Post by Richard the old one » Wed Sep 13, 2006 9:14 pm

I have been doing some comparison checks on the five 1500 engines that I have access to. I discovered that two out of the five had very little oil coming out of the oil-way blanking hole at the rear of the head (approx 10ml in a 30 second period) when I took the blanking bolt out and replaced it with a piece of 5/16 UNF thread in which I had drilled a 3mm hole. The screw thread with the hole enabled me to connect a piece of poly hose so that I could collect and measure the amount of oil being discharged during a 30 second period. Basic test technique. Run engine until up to normal operating temp with poly hose connected but with free end blanked. (This ensures the rocker shaft is oiled.). Then collect oil that is discharged in a 30 second period. A two litre ice cream container fits nicely between the engine and the inner wing to catch the oil. On reading obtained on the other engines were 40, 55 & 48ml.

As one of the engines with the low reading was my spare engine I was able to play with this and I have managed to clear the oil way and it now discharges about 65ml. I am waiting to get at the other engine to see if it has the same problem. If it is something more serious I obviously can go to the external oil feed kit.

It is easy to make up the equipment required to do the check and I strongly recommend that 1500 owners should check their engines. At a guess the 1300 engine may be the same. I will bring my gear to the TDCIR on Sunday so that anyone who wants to do the tests while we are there can.

Today I fitted an external oil feed to the spare engine but I have found it difficult to get a good oil seal at the rear of the head. I was too heavy handed on my first attempt and managed to snap the connecting bolt. Luckily the engine is not in a car as it would have been difficult to get out, I found that the casting had been machined to take the standard blanking bolt with flat copper washer but that the oil feed connection is slightly larger and so would not seat correctly. I had to file the casting. Plus I ended up also fitting an additional plain copper washer as the new bolt seemed to be very slightly too long.
SO TAKE CARE NOT TO SNAP THE CONNECTING BOLT.
Thanks for that information, well written and nice and informative! Excellent bit of work!

I looked under my rocker cover today and it's all soaked in oil, so I hope all is well
My 1500 engine runs almost totally silent, sometimes I can't tell if it's running
