wobbly engine?? 1850hl

#1 Post by stezzml » Sat Sep 09, 2006 12:06 am

i have been looking at my dolly and noticed the two engine mounts left and right seem ok but when looking underneath at gearbox mount it seems to move up and down quite a lot, also noticed a bracket attached to the exhaust and to the bell housing was cracked. (is the bracket meant to be there???) this in turn with the gearbox mount has caused the exhaust to blow at the manifold. the engine seems to wobble a lot, at junctions and at idle. is this normal or am i just looking for a problem thats not there, any suggestions please. thanks martin.

Gearbox mount

#2 Post by iandollysprint » Sat Sep 09, 2006 8:05 am

Had a similar problem with my sprint. Take off caused the gearbox/propshaft to wobble quite badly and at idle the engine would lurch about.

I changed the gearbox mount and the problem has now gone away. The sprint has a different mount to the 1850. Mine seems to have been softened due to oil leaks. It was in very bad shape when it was removed. I could waggle it in all directions. The new one is very stiff compared to the old one.

Changing the mount has given me a different problem though. With the engine/gearbox properly mounted to the car I can feel a rather bad engine vibration!!!!!
Engine Mounts

Yes, changed both the engine mounts on my 1850 earlier this year as I too had a wobbly engine - felt sea sick when waiting for the lights to change
Made a complete change to the car.

thanks for the info, if it left you feeling seasick, then i am still trying to catch my gearstick, or are there really three of them!!! are they relatively easy to change? it will be on my to do list after i have fitted the new propshaft centre bearing/carrier that i finally managed to track down..to get rid of another wobble... . cheers, look forward to any other tips i can get. martin

These are all standard features on an old 1850 especially if you have overdrive.
The centre rear gearbox mounting is likely to have become soaked in oil and gone soft. This is the first one to change if you have overdrive. If you remove the whole cross member and mounting at the same time it will make access to the from prop shaft flange nuts a bit easier. Sometimes you can just get the mount off on its own by undoing the long through bolt. Others I've just dropped the whole cross member, depending on which bolts refuse to come out easilly.
The cracked exhaust support is very common.
We should have these remade in the club...
If anyone had a pattern that is ....
thanks for the tips, at least i'm not alone in the problem, i have managed to get the exhaust bracket fixed by some nifty welding, just got to learn how to make time out of thin air to complete the job... .... still a bit scary to think of but exciting too.
