Richard: Extractor manifold

#1 Post by alun n » Tue Jul 08, 2003 10:55 pm

Richard, do you still have that photo of the manifold you could resend me? Called into my mates exhaust manufacturing place today and they are now set up with a jig shop to manufacture front pipes. If I send him the photo he will give me an opinion. If I can lend him the pipe he'll give us a quote. Minimum order would be about 15-20.

Is there sufficient interest????????????

Money

#4 Post by Richard » Wed Jul 09, 2003 7:45 pm
From experience of doing the Sierra disks with Malc for £100 where about half of people who 'definitely' wanted a set actually 'bought' a set, getting a batch of 15-20 at around £400 per person will be tricky.

I found the same when trying to do a Quaiffe batch last year. I had lots of 'interest', but no where near enough to get a batch made.

I thought we'd exhausted the manifold topic (if you pardon the pun) as each manifold would have to be measured up for each car as the clearances were so tight, therefore making a batch prohibitively expensive?

Besides theres loads of things you can do to a Sprint engine to improve power before this is a major bottleneck.

With a jig shop to hand and a master tool maker to make the jig, if the pattern used to make up the jig fits, then they all should.....

PS Richard, what happened to those snazy keyrings you taunted me with a while ago?

jigs

Hmmm... assuming the car used as a pattern is straight, the vehicle it is going to is straight etc. What were the production tolerances on the bodies like in the first place?I would expect the pipes to fit the engine fine but I suspect a fair bit of fettling would be needed elsewhere.....

Batch

#8 Post by Richard » Tue Jul 15, 2003 8:57 pm
OK, here's the deal :-

I've just spoken to Phil who has a 4 branch manifold in his shed. It's not the Triumphtune one which I have been told is not very good or the Sprintspares one which the owner of TSB71L told me fits if you move the engine back. This one will work with slight mods to the turret.

Phil is going to send me pics of the exhaust and of the required mods. I'll send these to all interested parties to see if we want to go ahead with a batch.

I'll get the manifold from Phil and ask my exhaust man and if Alun can ask his exhaust man for costs.

How many of you are seriously interested ?

Please e-mail me at richard.hyde@ubs.com ONLY and I'll add you to the list.

cheers, Richard.

ps - give 15% extra bhp !

turret mods

#10 Post by Dave » Wed Jul 16, 2003 12:33 pm

IIRC the cars I've seen with slight(!) turret mods involve cutting a slice out of it from around 3 inches below the top to just above the rail. Then fabricating a fill in piece that gives as much clearance inside the car as possible.

Any other takers for the 4 branch manifold ? The more people we have, the cheaper the unit price will be ....

I might be interested, but would like to ensure that it will fit on a Latham first - the chassis tubes might be a real problem.

CAn't be any more tricky than a Sprint surely?

Would a 16v TR7 item fit a Latham?

Manifold...

#15 Post by JonB » Thu Jul 24, 2003 2:53 pm

You think its possible for an exhaust manifold to give 15% (roughly 20 bhp) on a sprint? (regardless of tune / extras) You're having a laugh aren't you? If not then you're just plain deluding yourself.

If anyone can prove before and after rolling road readings to justify anything near that, I'll take their wife / girlfiend out for an evening. (Before you argue, thats a trouble free night in the pub.....)

Jon

p.s i'm not saying its not a good idea, I'd kill for one, but 15%???
