Club events - your views please everyone!

#1 Post by triumphdolomiteuk » Wed Mar 24, 2004 2:53 pm

We're in the process of arranging our annual rally and regional "Dolly Days" and we would like to hear your views on the kind of events you'd like. We'd like as many of you as possible to join in a discussion and just tell us what sort of event would suit you and your family best.
How far would you be prepared to travel? Would you prefer a one day or a weekend-long event? Would paying an admission charge put you off attending? Would you prefer the event to be held at an attraction where there is something other than just cars to look at? We'd especially like to hear your partner's views on what sort of an event they'd prefer!
Traditionally our annual rally has been held in September, but with so many other events going on during that month would an August date be preferable or would everyone be on holiday then?
We know that there are great many of you who read the messages on these forums and we'd really like you all to give us some feedback on what you'd like from the club events-wise.
Club events

#2 Post by Matt Cotton » Wed Mar 24, 2004 7:44 pm

I think its a good idea if club gatherings can be held at venues that offer more than just cars. Hatton Country World was a good venue and I know my family enjoyed the day out because there was some variety.

I thought Cosford last year was excellent and will take some beating, again it offered more than just Dolomites for all the family. However It was disappointing that so few members made a 'weekend of it' by staying overnight. Part of the fun of being involved in the club is the social aspect. Taking this into consideration, not all members have the time and lead very busy lifestyles, so perhaps the 1-day event is better.
Good thing too, eh Matt.........that all members didn't make a weekend of it!!

My views remain as last year Andy; Midlands is good as its central to everyone (especially me!), but I will travel, and have done so frequently, but an Essex venue may preclude our northern friends and vv?

An admission fee is bearable, but there needs to be a reason, ie other events or posh venue for instance.

A two dayer might be worth considering, I know for a fact there are some who still keep Sunday special, but equally there are those who work on Saturday. Camping perhaps, with a show event over the two days?

How about somewhere like in a field adjacent the Severn Valley Railway; we've done planes three times, how about trains with the automobiles?

"Camping perhaps,"
"How about somewhere like in a field"

'fraid my camping days are over old chap.. Mrs F doesn't do anything less than 4 star!

I do agree that there should be some attraction other than boys toys, I can see that Hatton would have been good for that reason.

Personally I prefer a one day event because there is always so many other things I have to get done at weekends. As far as location is concerned I agree with Alun that Midlands is logical - but like him I would say that wouldn't I!
Didn't know that you could go in for Petrochemical production at home, or does Mrs F work for Shell???
(Sorry couldn't resist a rather cheap and relatively humourless pun)
I would agree with yourself and Alun, for the same reasons. I aslo thought about somewhere with a railway conection but was afraid to mention it in case I had to put my anorak on. I also thought about the National Tramway Museum at Critch, as it's not far off and there's quite a bit to look at. Great Central Railway and Nottingham Heritage Centre at Ruddington also came to mind.
Could do a bit for this as it is an existing event, but would make things easier to join in and show off to other classic car owners, make them realise what they're missing out on...?

PS - if this is already done, or has been tried, I do apologise as a recent member!
Anybody been to the TR meeting at Malvern? It`s not too bad. Got indoor areas for concours events ,trade stands, (not spoiled completely if it rains) camping facilities and is sort of in the Midlands. We could do something like what was done for the first " Triumph World Picnic" (anyone remember that one at Hickstead) that was 2 days, the busiest day was Sunday. There was a music trailer, plus food and drink trailers. As Alun said it would have to be in the Midlands to make it easy for everyone.

Yep, The Oxon group had four cars on display last year. We were guests of the TR Register who made us most welcome. However, the normal entrance fee was about £12 IIRC, seemed a bit steep for just a day, although a lot of TR Drivers camp for the weekend. ? is, what do people think is a reasonable entry price, we wouldn't want to put people off. Collaborative events do work well IMHO. I didn't do the T World picnic you refer to Spiro, but have done the last three. Beale park is great unless you live north of the Midlands which makes it 'long distance' for those in the North

How about Billing Aquadrome at Northampton ? advertises itself as "The Seaside without the sea" permanent fun fair, lakes, waterskiing, jetskis, shops etc. 270 acres of camping/caravan and events fields. and all this about 4 miles from J15 of M1. The events fields are already used by ford cortina, ford corsair, and many other clubs. Personally I like the one day events, but being a caravaner as well, Taking the caravan and making a weekend of it is also good.
Dont forget Dolly Day at Peterborough (August bank hol)also has Nene Valley Steam Railway near by, the track runs through the site. (and a caravan site)
In response to you questions:

1. In respect to how far would you go it does depend on the location of the event as I have to keep the wife happy. I can see that to get a good turn out of members it needs to be fairly central or where there is a high concentration of members.
2. I have stayed overnight before and enjoyed this. So I(we) would do it again but the wife would not agree to camping any more.
3. A reasonable admission charge would not put me off
4. I would prefer the event to be held where there is something other than just cars to see. Again to keep the wife happy.
5. I can confirm that the wife has been consulted in the preparation of this response.
6. We consider that September is a good time to hold the main club event as it is clear of the main holiday period.

Many thanks for giving me the opportunity to comments and I hope that a few more members will respond as I note that there have not been many so far.
