Dolly mixture cover car.

#1 Post by algtj » Fri Aug 18, 2006 10:57 pm

Stunning, the first one I have seen in a metallic colour and looks fantastic.

For the future would it be possible to have a feature on the cover car's used?

I would love to know more about this car and 1300 SE's in particular, as I thought they were more myth than fact.

My thirst need's quenching.... More info please?

Agreed, absolutely stunning car, however, I thought it was a one off. Never heard of the 1300SE myth. Don't recognise the colour either. Lovely car and a credit to the owner

It is indeed a 'one off'

It was built by engineers at Triumph and presented to the Triumph 'Marketing Team' who promptly drew air sharply through clenched teeth and responded 'couldn't sell that at the price point in the market' so it didn't get into the model range.

You will note its Cov reg number. The car was found by Bruce Jones and passed to Bill 'Restored more SE's than you and I have had hot dinners' Shankland in Carlisle who did his usual on it.

At the NEC last Nov, this car was at alongside John Glenns restored Sprint and the originall owner was invited to come along to see both cars, he had owned them both, he was lost for words.

Give me a few hours with a DA and a spraygun and you can have your Dolomite any colour you want .

The 1300SE is painted in BL 'Denim Blue Metalic' as used on Allagros, Moronas, Princess etc etc of the day. This 1300 SE left Canley in this particular shade which was never offered as an option in the Dolomite Range, this one is a genuine one off.

There was a X plate Sprint around a few years back, a re-shell and it was painted in a similar shade.
It would have been interesting to know if this car was indeed painted at Canley as I not sure they'd have the facilities to a one off, more probable is that it was sent to either Cowley or Longbridge for the paint (as it is a sort of Austin/Morris Colour).

Now, that would have been good to see a Dolomite running down the line to the paint shop among Marinas or Allegros etc

Wonder where the car would have been pitched price wise? obviously above the Dolomite 1300 but below that of a base model 1500 yet still below that of a 1500HL, probably why it was never launched?

1300 SE

#11 Post by 1300mash » Mon Aug 21, 2006 9:03 am

Weren't there three of them rather than just the one or is my memory playing tricks?

I assume the price problem was the fact that it was a 1300 engine? I can understand how it probably wouldn't have been popular as a standard model in the range with a 1296 motor but even as a Ltd Edition later on were they still fairly slow to sell?

This car is T-reg and I assume registered in latter half of 1978. IIRC there are a few 1500 SEs on T-plates. However, if the blue one was a 1979 registration it could potentially only be a couple of months until introduction of the genuine article now with the bigger engine to tempt more buyers.

I was under the impression that there were three cars produced, all with slightly different specifications. I've since learnt that there may have been as many as seven cars.
There is one other survivor, which now resides in Coventry, but I've no idea what happened to the other one(s).
Next question is, how on earth do you value such rare cars.
Got to be worth the same sort of money as an average Sprint, purely on rareity?
MK1 Escort 1300 E.......?
