Re: Hmmm...
Just on the noise issue morebhp (Sorry I've forgotten your real name!), at track events etc it has to be measured 1 metre from the car at a 45 degree angle to the exhaust outlet. Its then supposed to be 3/4 of your red line max that they test it at. Roughly 4500rpm for me as I tell them 6500rpm red line as does everyone else who rev theirs to 8500rpm!.

Apologies if you know all this already. I didn't want you turning up at an event and failing the noise test due to not knowing how they do it. Most events are 98db these days, the more expensive tend to be 105db.
The bloke asked me for 4500rpm. Couldn't see him in my rear view, so I only gave him 3500rpm. He reappeared, showed me the display, and said "That was close, wasn't it" - the display read 103db, so I got straight back to blatting round the track. (Elvington has a 105db limit!)
Re: Hmmm...
Daimler V8 is a nice engine, revs lovely too. "Only" ~140BHP which isn't bad considering it's a 2.5 - expensive to keep going these days mind, I looked into rebuilding one in MK and getting the bits is a bit grim
Re: Hmmm...
Really lovely engine that. I rebuilt one about 7 or 8 years ago for a guy who had a V8 250 saloon. What a great car that was and dare I say it, nicer than the jag version, it made a great noise.

...that's the V8 identified a few years back, not a lot of ooomph for a heavy car when you look at it, but as I say it will go well in the elise

Re: Hmmm...
Going back to the noise issue, there seems to be different methods then. At Castle Combe and Keevil the measurement was taken from 0.5 metres from the end of the zorst @ 4500 rpm for all cars (both 100db max.). Mallory's good as they don't even do a noise test.

V8's
I've got the utmost respect for anyone who carries out a V8 conversion, but unless you've got a seriously tuned lump (like the AJP unit) you really need to work hard to justify using one instead of a modern 4-pot.

A bog standard Rover V8 is no more powerful than a lightly breathed on Sprint engine, and to get a worthwhile increase in power can cost you megabucks.

As for american V8's, yeah great but in stock form they are generally desparately inefficient, usually producing about 50bhp/litre.

And all that weight hanging over the front wheels isnt going to help make an already nose heavy car handle any better.

I think Phils pitched it about right, being British the AJP produces a good power output but I dare say its coming at a price.

Of course no 4-pot can ever make a sound as glorious as a V8 and engines like the Toyota 4AGE, Cossie YB and Vauxhall C20XE/LET can give you an equal pain in the overdraft if you go to extremes, but a good 4-pot is pound for pound better value to both buy and maintain.

The V8 conversion though probably doesnt give many more headaches than my XE conversion as most 4 pots are vertically mounted oposed to a sprints slant 4 arrangement, although the engine is much much shorter I still had issues with subframe and sump and the bulkhead and tunnel has required some serious fettling. It looks unlikely that I'll get away without any bonnet bulges too.

I still reckon one of the best potential conversions is the honda S2000 running gear, lightweight all alloy, 240bhp (350bhp potential), slick 6-speed gearbox and a 9000 reliable rpm redline.

Trouble is, Mart refuese to stick his S in a ditch for me so I'll have to stick to the Vauxhall plans.

Daimler...
V8 would be interesting in a Dolly if ultimatley a bit pointless..
I'm not overly convinced by their robustness either. The oil pressure on most struggles to hit 20 psi hot and I did one once that was firing on seven pots after making a "funny noise". Slight misfire and a merest hint of blue smoke out of one zorst. Owner drove some 30 miles since the funny noise...
Compresion test revealed one pot seriously down and a suspicilsly clean plug...head off and
NO PISTON!
Err...where did that go then? Was found in about 10 large bits in the sump and the gudgeon pin and rod were merrily doing their stuff solo.
Lucky...thats more than lucky! Divine intervention I call it as it belonged to my old minister!
Re: Re:Found it
As far as I can recall an SBF 302 with alloy heads and intake weighs the same as an Essex lump - hence the popularity for Crapi conversions as it doesn't upset the handling too much
Still, another 40kg is still quite a bit to hang over the nose. Moving it back would be good I think! (I.e Ford 302 compared to Sprint lump)
