Concours is a bit boring, I agree. Can we have a prize for Most Miles in a Dolly This Year, to see how much people are actually driving their cars, rather than polishing them? The Odoemeter on my car has done loads of miles, but only because I accidentally left it in the boot of my fiesta...

In reply to a few comments posted;
We used to have a "Dog of the Day" award for those "unfinished projects". However, we felt as a committee that this could be taken the wrong way and that it may discourage members whose cars were "well-used" from attending. The whole point is that the concours should be a bit of fun and that it shouldn't dominate proceedings at our annual get together.
I had a call from a member at the weekend who was concerned that TDCIR was only for "show cars". This is certainly not the case, owners of ALL cars are encouraged to attend. This is our annual meet, a chance for members (and non-members) and their families to socialise, make new friends, buy and sell spares, ask for advice and generally have a relaxed day out. It is not a classic car show in which members of the public pay to come in and look at rows of highly-polished cars. We will have the exclusive use of the smaller field at Hatton, not the top field which is used by the public.

Someone asked what the categories used in the past were? Up until 2000 we had awards for (as far as I can remember);
Best Sprint - original
Best Sprint - restored
Best Dolomite - original
Best Dolomite - restored
Best FWD - original
Best FWD - restored
Technical Award
Best modified car
Best kit car
"Most interesting car of the day" (I believe this was voted for by the members)
Car of the day
Long distance (UK/overseas)
Area display

The last time we attempted this was at the event in 2000 where attendance was down due to the petrol blockade. I recall that we ammended the categories on the day to take account of the low attendance (and concours entries). The following year we changed the categories to the ones listed in my earlier post.
It's going to be a busy day for the committee as we're intending to hold our AGM at TDCIR, so if anyone would like to volunteer to take care of the concours, that would be a great help. It's getting quite close now and trophies need to be ordered....
Andy,

For an unbiased view I will put myself forward as a Judge being a new club member, all I request is a Judge or two in a similar position to myself join me so we can all be burnt at a stake after the event!?

My first choice of partner would be purplebargeken or Ken (if he is willing), as we are both as new to the marque and drive everyday example's, and therefore we don't know all the fraternity and all the past winner's.

This could set a precident.... Invite new member's of the club to pick what they feel are the best car's on show......
This could serve to increase their interest and make present owners polish or increase corrosion!

Just an Idea......
And a very good idea it is too! If Ken is up for it, and everyone (well at least the people who have participated i this discussion) like the idea, I think it may be a possibility.
The only condition is that awards must only be given to TDC members, so we always ask the shortlisted owners to report to "Rally HQ" (AKA "Dolomite House") to confirm their membership status before we announce the winners.
I like this idea very much.

I also think that acknowledgement is due to Andy for opening this up to the floor. It is what I love about this Club, and what seperates us so distinctly from other Clubs, who can be unbelieveably precious about things like Concours competitions, whatever shape they take.

Well done all. I'll see Ken tomorrow and try a bit of arm twisting for you Al...

No twisting required, too bloody painful

Spent two hours swimming this morning and then stripped one sill on small white Dolly to bare metal and my arms are aching like b*ggery. Took ages to do but results should be worthwhile. No holes but a few scabs at the front, not bad for a 25 year old car on original sills Sill now pumped full of cavity wax
Good work Ken!

Just to reiterate Martin's thought's well done Andy for the open forum on this subject.

Ken, don't get too excited it was just a thought, and nobody apart from Andy, Martin, you, and I are up for it!
Any other idea's or thought's on the above anybody?

Quote:
who can be unbelieveably precious about things like Concours competitions

Some of the larger clubs do hold very formal competitions; I've seen cars (not Dolomites) up on axle stands having their brake lines polished in preparation for concours judging. I'm in no way going to knock people who are into that kind of activity, I think it's nice to see cars finished to a high standard. It's also nice to see cars which are well looked after, but clearly in regular use.
In a relatively small club such as ours, I think it's become clear that members aren't interested in formal concours contests, or at least only a small number of members are bothered, but not enough to make it a viable proposition. Although we bill TDCIR as "our annual rally and concours", I think less emphasis has been placed on the concours over the past few years. We're quite happy to let members decide how we run this event, we never intended the club to be run as a dictatorship. Similarly, we're always willing to let members express their opinions and help decide the direction in which the club moves. That's one reason why this forum exists and why we hold an AGM. The committee always saw itself as "temporary custodians" of the club; when we took on the task of running the club five years ago, we did so on the basis that we would get things "back on track" prior to handing over to a new group of volunteers. Things didn't quite go according to plan and we are still in office doing our best to keep the ship afloat. It's only with the support and ideas from the membership that we are able to keep it going .
