Concours@TDCIR - what do YOU think?
With a little over a month to go before our main event of the year (TDCIR), I thought I'd ask members for their opinion on how our concours competition should be run.
In "the old days" we held a "semi-formal" competition in which members were invited to enter their cars and they would be judged using a points system. Interest in this kind of contest seemed to dwindle and so it was abandoned. It was replaced by a very informal system; a "volunteer" was found who would wander round the showground and choose the best cars (in their opinion). However, there were a few mutterings of discontent about this last year, hence why I'm giving people the chance to say how they would like the contest to be run this time. With a wedge of Rimmer Bros gift vouchers and some trophies on offer for the winners, we want the contest to be as fair as possible, but also to be taken as a bit of fun.
So, do you have any thoughts?
#A voting slip given to the fare paying public (Over 16) and let them decide,
Simply by writing the Reg Number of the car they like best,
A voting box to be keeped at the TDC stand and counted vote's at the end of the day.

It must be decided if you give every a vote or just the car driver and one passenger,
Or simply keep the voting slip's on the Stand.

1980 Dolomite SprintV8 (In the process of modifying the Alloy sump)
2002 Citroen Xsara 2.0 HDi Estate.... Part's delivery Vehicle.
They laugh at me because I am different. I laugh at them because they are all the same!)
concours
Let the public, who have no idea about our cars, vote? (Ooo me uncle Del used to ave wun ov them 2000's, nice cars aint they?) No thanks.

Public vote for public award is ok but if we are to have anything like a concours then we owe it to ourselves, and the entrants, to have that voting done by someone who knows the cars and is preferably independant.

Re: concours
But then it's more of a formal concours event, with people nit-picking over whether it's the correct screw being used in the correct washer to hold on the correct grab handle etc. and we all know that that is not what the TDC is about. The club is all about enjoying 'our' cars, and judging just by shineyness and historical accuracy will not reflect that.

I think one member, one vote. Show your membership card at the stand and write down the registration of the car you like best.

You cannot hide your light under a bushel!

Let the public have their say, if only for a separate award. We all think our cars are great and are therefore biased. Our public peers opinion is surely important lest we develop a lofty and gnostic grandeur!?

The danger is though, Dave Hames will win again!

Re: concours
Thanks for the comments so far , but just a couple of points to make;
This year the event (TDCIR) will be free to enter (last year was the first year since 2000 at which we had to charge admission and this was beyond our control) and we will have the exclusive use of a field at Hatton. This will mean that we won't have the general public mingling with our cars, it will be mainly club members - although it must be stated that anyone is welcome to attend, TDC member or otherwise. Just remember that when you arrive at Hatton, we will be in the smaller field to the right of the entrance road, not the main "overflow" carpark at the top.

We did have an element of voting in the past; members were invited to choose their car of the day, but it was such a bind to sort out, we decided to knock it on the head and just ask someone to choose the winners. One year we asked a couple of members from another club (TSOC) to do the judging and they did a very good job, obviously being independant they couldn't be accused of bias.

The awards we usually give out are as follows;

Best OHC (Sprint/1850),with runner up and third place.
Best OHV (1500TC,Toledo,1300&1500 Dolomite), with runner up and third place.
Best FWD (1300&1500), with runner up and third place.
Best Dolomite-based kit car.
Best area group display.
Long distance UK and overseas.
Graham Robson (Ex BL Competition Manager) seems to still be active and keen (though didn't he have some sort of "issues" over the last Administrator of TDC), maybe a good time to heal the rift and invite him as a V I P?

Re: concours
If there were any issues in the past, these were certainly resolved as long ago as 2000 when we attended the T.I.M.E. event at Mallory Park. Our relationship with Graham has been a good one at least from that point onwards, if not before. He has been very supportive of the club and its aims.
We do have other contacts from Standard-Triumph, at least one of whom may be in attendance at TDCIR, but I'll confirm that nearer the date.
Re: concours
I attended an event recently where the fellow exhibitors voted on all teh other exhibits and it worked really well. You can have as many categories as you like and you can vote for any car except your own. On each voting slip we had to enter our reg or exhibitor number to vote and then voted for the cars we wanted to win.

As every one was judging their fellow owners cars, itwas felt to be very equitable. We could continue to have the categories we have used in the passed, this time it would be all teh fellow dolly owners deciding on the cars they felt price worthy. You could add a few less formal categories like "the car I would most like to swap mine for" or "the car I would most like to drive home in".

You could even combine it with more formal voting so you had judge winners for some categories and other exhibitors votes for others.

I'll even volunteer to print the voting slips if you thinks its a good idea

Voting
I like the last suggestion... Giving all club members the chance to vote sounds fair and it would be fun too.

I'm thinking of coming for the first time, and I would look forward to coming to see everyone's car. I might be coming on my own, so going round and voting would be like an ice breaker. It would be a good conversation piece.

What are the catagories of competition that were used in the past?

I think some of us new Dolomite owners might just need a few guidance notes as to how best to apply the criteria, but I'm sure we could use good judgement.

I don't think my car is up to scratch, but It would be fun to enter.

Sounds good
Re: concours
I agree with scott and dave, each tdc member to get a voting slip , that way its not down to one person. you could also hold a public vote for a seperate award.
but why have a concourse show? why not a 'complete shed but used daily award'
A similar...
approach is taken at the shows over this side of the pond. In ones welcome package are voting slips so you can vote on the other classes. There is nothing to say you can't vote for your own motor so everyone should get at least one vote
