Quote:
not all parts are available currently, and not all parts have been remade, so there is a need for these people to exist

How many cars have been broken for the sole reason that the owner couldn't obtain a certain part required to keep the car on the road?
I suspect that the answer is; very few. It's far more likely that the owner couldn't afford the expense of buying new parts, paying garage labour charges for the repairs, or simply lost interest in the car and then had to move it on quickly due to lack of storage space. At this point they become receptive to the offers made by certain breakers. The breaker gets a cheap car which they then sell off piece by piece to make a few quid.
I accept that in the short term, this may benefit everyone; owner gets shot of his car, breaker makes a bit of beer money, enthusiast gets cheap parts to keep his own car on the road - everybody happy! But it can't last...
In time we will see far fewer complete cars and owners will find it far more difficult to source the parts needed to keep them running. Why? Because the smaller the number of cars running, the less parts that will be required. No manufacturer will invest in making a batch of brake pads (as an example) if there are only a couple of hundred cars left. We will start to see supplies of new or reconditioned parts dry up. Much as we would like to, the club is not in a position to supply every part needed to keep our cars on the road, hence we rely on traders like Rimmers to help us. It's in our best interests to encourage owners to restore their cars, or at least pass them on to people who will put them back on the road, rather than selling them to breakers.
Re: Hall Of Shame
Breaking cars which are really past it to save one good wing or a recently reconned engine or good running engine around which the body has completely collapsed is one thing, and in all honesty is fine.

Breaking a car because it is worth more in parts than whole is bad...and anyone who supports this may as well frankly be advocating breaking most of the remaining 1300 and 1500 examples as at current market prices this would be the case! However. look at the example of the tidy looking 1300 which has been hawked on ebay at least 3 times; no-one wanted it and now its being broken...tough.

I wholeheartedly support Andy's words.

Moving on to market prices please be aware there is NOTHING we can do to inflate these. Value is all down to perception and a pig gets no heavier if you just keep weighing it! Back in Jan 1990 when C&S did their excellent article various "club" adverts were placed in the Classified section for cars for sale at inflated values; none sold. Prices were not increased. If you want a daily classic worth £6k, go buy one, but don't expect a £3k car to magically increase to you own rosy expectations. The only way to increase a cars value is to do work to it to make it more saleable; this however in invariably unviable with 'our' cars from a point of consideration to time and parts expended. VLK when finished will likely sell for about £3k absolute tops; Steve and I will have brought it back from the edge of extinction; counter this with the ruck of parts put on (at little cost from 'stock') and the two years it will have taken and we might just be able to raise a pint apiece to celebrate our 'profit'

Commendable bidding so far on one hand perhaps David; personally I only bid on cars I'm prepared to buy and do something with, do you?. If you look on the other hand, your bid histories can demonstrate that you have prevented someone called "Kirsty" from possibly buying at least three of the cars you have bid on, if "Kirsty" would be a new owner/member is this really constructive? Maybe 'she'(?) is now despondant and has given up? Whichever, the more she spends on the car initially, the less she has in budget (financially and incentively) to do things with it afterwards...

I'm going to look at the local Blue one tonight on behalf of someone genuinely interested in buying it; as a result, they will bid to what I consider its worth. If someone outbids them without having seen it, then all I will be able to say is more fool them. It won't mean the value has been increased, it will probably mean the car gets scrapped by them!
While I agree with some of your views, I'm a bit upset by some of what you have said.

I will quite happily buy the yellow sprint (if thats the one you refer to?) and get it back on the road if I can. If not I will sell it on to someone who can. Two other cars I have bought were going to be scrapped but I bought them and they are now going to be restored - I hope. I'd be surprised if someone would travel as far as the prospective owner just to break the car up. I have had the chance to promote the club while I am at it so hopefully new members.

I have just sold my daily driver so I can keep another dolomite as my daily driver. I do not have the luxury of sufficient space to just buy cars and keep them just in case I ever do anything with them. I'm not sure how many you have but there are others here who have cars lying around that will never get any work done on them. There isn't a car on my drive that hasn't had work done on it in the last month, and that includes the non triumphs.

I admit to breaking one car, which was really not worth saving, but it was already part broken when I got it.One of the cars I bought I was only really interested in the spares that came with it, but the owner would not sell them seperately. I admit to never having the intention to do anything with the car, but selling it on whole is enough surely?

Any car I bid on I am prepared to buy - check out my feedback. That said I have suffered at the hands of others who have not done me the same service. Ironically I have only had this problem when selling dolomites or dolomite parts - from the one broken car mentioned above.

Bidding on ebay is a lottery as we all know. I have bid on a couple with the hope that one will be a good enough base and if I get one that needs more work, then I will sell it. My descriptions are always very honest.

I am a new member of the club but I am trying to do the right thing by cars that I have always been a fan of. I may not always get this right - its a learning process, but I'm pretty upset that you think I'm trying to outbid just for the sake of it. I'll have a sprint finished soon anyway (its still worth much more in bits)- Kirsty might like to bid on that if she doesn't win the yellow one. The yellow one is worth more than I am prepared to bid anyway - I think
Don't be upset...
...as no offence was intended.

Having put your money where your mouth is so to speak more than once, you are certainly doing your bit in the scheme of things.

My response was not intended to be focussed to you as it perhaps appears, it just naturally linked to market values from what had been said before. All I was highlighting was if I was looking to break into the world that is Dolomite and every car I tried to buy I'd been outbid by the same person who already had one or two then I'd perhaps be a bit put off? Attempting to encourage prices upwards in this manner could be a double edged sword?

I agree, ebay is a lottery, but if the same person won the lottery every week then no-one else would buy a ticket.

I watch every Dolomite that goes through ebay (yes, I'm that sad, and if you are selling one and you only have one watcher, sorry, its me!) and I know that some of these cars are going to their final homes. What you or I may see as a restoration case in an informed and experienced manner, others will fall with at the first hurdle. So to buy a car to do up and resell as a more viable proposition for the third party, I salute you sir!

Still think you should have gone for that one in the states...

Re: Don't be upset...
An interesting discourse!

Anyway, back on subject...

Phil, the 2000 you saw was probably his very nice slate grey example, he's had that a few years now and it does a lot of work, family holidays, days out, the last 10cr sorta thing. He's also got a very tidy looking red Vitesse lidless thats doing the next 10cr and a soon to be broken Vitesse thats engine and OD box will be doing the next 10cr in the red one. This guy most definately knows which end of a welding torch to hold so if he says the vitesse is past it then past it it is. If it was a white 2000 on the drive you know whose that is.

I've a handful of photos of the sprint from when I looked at it a fair while ago now. If anyone would like a copy PM me an email address, I'm sure the owner won't mind if I assist his marketing a bit.
I've just been contacted by the seller, he's asked me to post his apologies here to all those who were or planning to bid.
The car has been sold locally for less than it probably would have made on the bay but it's gone to a local chap who will be getting it back on the road. Apparantly the chap already has an 1850.
Bought it
Picking it up tomorrow. Will replace the MRS current 1850cc,Pete the seller is a great bloke to deal with and let us have the car for a GOOD price.Need to go through the brakes, cooling ect and finish the welding, then MOT it .It will have to run around in primer until the money becomes available for a decent paint job.
I'm going to have to replace the exhaust(i think) so a performance one would be nice,i'll have to hunt around for quality/price.I would like to squeeze every bit of bhp from it without going mad,any suggestions?

Re: Bought it
Primer isn't waterproof by the way. It'll rust through faily quickly meaning you have to take it all off again and re primer it

Excellent. Welcome to the forum and keep us up to date on your progress. PLenty of help and advice available on here FOC. If you want access to club parts I would suggest joining up fairly early as it will pay for itself fairly quickly. Isn't that right Adam!
Re: Bought it
Thanks for all your help,i will join the club asap. Are the parts cheaper than the "specialist suppliers"?
Hammerite-magic stuff especially since i discovered satin black smooth-paint on.I agree with the primer comments, probably go to my local paint supplier in Hanwell and get a spray can of Inca made up for the driver's wing and red lead the other bits.
I would be VERY interested in the Sprint performance exhaust, where in the counry are you?
Will be picking the said Sprint up tonight around 7.00 with a very good friends flat bed car transporter and putting straight into another friend's lock up.
