Have you tried a local engine reconditioners at all? May be able to supply a better quality ring at a competitive price.
re SAAB, The stroke stayed the same through most of the 99 /900 lifeline, but I'm fairly certain they changed some intenals when they introduced the h202. obviously it changed on the 2.1, but thats a different kettle of fish!

Pist & Broke

#17 Post by MaddMart » Wed Jun 28, 2006 8:51 pm

OK, it seems to be the season for broken pistons. Here's a few pics of mine:-

I measured the top of the piston dia. which is 90.75mm. approx.

Anyone got a spare set of +0.040" pistons going cheap?

Or do I take a chance on one of the two spare blocks I have?

I've had a reply from XRN Engineering saying they don't supply Sprint pistons but have got TR7s @ £125 + vat. Am I right in saying that these don't have the indents on the piston crown so therefore a thicker head gasket is needed. (sure I read that on here recently).

the indents are a different shape matching the larger and fewer valves...
Doesn't feel right to me, the head gasket would need to be thicker by the depth of the indents (a mm or two IIRC) which would have a pretty drastic effect on compression.
Don't think anything has the same pistons as a sprint which is why they are so damn expensive.
BodgerBen was saying a couple of years ago that TTS performance supplied his JE forged pistons for £400. I know its not cheap but in the long run, if they still do them or can do them at that price.......

I paid close to £900 BTW for mine.

I can get through a few sets of standard pistons then for that amount.

I just finished stripping down a spare block I had in the garage (I think it's the one Graeme let me have) & it's in pretty good nick. All std. pistons & bearings, bores seem ok & crankshaft too. So I'm thinking, a new set of rings, hone out the bores & a new set of big ends & mains. There's about 0.007" end float in the crank so that's ok.

What's happened to Ben. He's not been on here for yonks?

Don't know. Maybe he'll be around at CARS this weekend.

I thought the mahle pistons were knocking on £250 per set?

I know second hand is going to be cheaper but even they are pretty hard to come by in good nick aren't they?
Rimmers want £291 for a standard set & £282 for o/sized.

I've emailed the guy at XRN Engineering who reckons you can use TR7 pistons. Maybe he knows something we don't. Never seen a 7 piston so can't comment.

Edit: Just seen a set of low compression 7 pistons on ebay. They should give enough clearance but would lower the compression ratio.
The tr7 pistons have two indents in them for the two valves

I've also heard there a lower compression. But if you do want some just ask the TDC TR7 engines officer

I have a couple of sets of s/h standard pistons and rods in the garage Mart.

I've seen both types of piston in TR7 engines, the ones with the dish and ones like the Sprint items; I suspect Sprint ones had been used to up the CR by PO's...

That car I just bought has an alleged rebuilt engine

blocks and pistons are same for sprint & 7
it's is the head which makes a very slight
compresion difference of about .25

I can't remember where or whom told me but TR7 pistons will fit no problem and because they lower compression are ideal if you have a highly skimmed head or if you want to turbocharge the engine.

I'm trying to remember the history of that block Mart - I think its the one that was in my car when I bought it. Never had any problems with the bottom end but the pistons did have a collision with the valves. I dont think any major piston damage occured - just a few marks in the crowns.

Sprint pistons only have 'two' valve clearance indents. Looking at the arrow on the piston crown and assuming this is 'front of engine' then the clearance indents will be inlet.

Bow to the wisdom of my fellow contributors on the suitablilty of 7 pistys, twas bout 1986 last time I had the head of a Severn, mate of mine had the head 'skimmed on the cheap', think they planed about half an inch of it!!!!!, two headgaskets went on that one , well, we were young and my mate was mainly pist'n broke so sometimes you just have to try things, ran well afterwards, not sure for how long though, was PX'd for something considered to be "a bit more sensible"

It was too hot today to start lifting engines out so I just dismantled a few bitz & gave Smifter's old block a refurbish. Every orifice cleaned out & ran a tap down every bolt hole.
