Worn Piston Ring
Worn Piston Ring
I did a compression test on my Track Sprint this morning before & after I re-torqued the head. My tester isn't brilliant but it did show that no. 4 cylinder was down relative to the others. So I took the car down to my Bro-in-Law's garage so that he could check it properly. Sure enough, no. 1,2 & 3 cylinders were between 160 & 165 psi. Unfortunately no. 4 was only 70 psi. As there are a lot of fumes coming from the crankcase breather as well, it's a fair chance that the rings are worn.

My pistons are +0.060" oversize. Anyone know where to get a set of +0.060" oversize rings from. Rimmers don't list them. SAAB 99 ?

Re: Worn Ring
Put some oil down the plug tube and test again. A momentary rise in compression will prove ring failure. The fact its number 4 is a bit telling too though

SAAB rings would be too small wouldn't they, wasn't that the 1850 bore? Try Sprintparts...

Re: Worn Ring
Ahhh but Alun your forgetting. Its a slant so the oil will sit at the bottom of the piston and not provide a full seal.

Re: Worn Ring
That depends on how you apply it; if you have devised a pippette which sprays it in a cone it does the job as I say...momentarily.

It always pays to make sure you do the job well when spraying into a ring, no matter how old or worn it is.

oil
adam asked me if i'd seen the plume behind your car i hadn't but did veiw it and could see from the photo that it was more than steam as it was still lurking in the air quite heavy
i suspect rather than a worn ring it's probably a broken one if i suspect the engine has obviously undergone some work prior to you using it on the track
or even a piston . saab ones used a smaller bore (.4 b20..) so doubt even with oversizes a match would be posible

Re: oil
If it's just for Track use you could try gapless ring set
As used by most Racer's in Natonal HotRods ETC.
Re: oil
I thought that SAAB did a 2 litre, but as George says, probably a diferent bore size. Come to think of it, I'm sure Andy (the guy I bought the car off) said they were SAAB pistons.

I'm in the middle of stripping the engine down & all will be revealed next week, I expect.

Gapless rings, expensive ? Couldn't see any prices.

Re: Gapless Ring's.
Advantages
You get and keep all the compression without ring blow by.

Disadvantage's
Cost,
And the bore must be perfectly round.
Best on new or partly used bore's.

Should of added that earlier.
You really must be careful with your ring you know, wear it out and the fluids won't stay in your bottom end.

Are you sure they are +0.060" ?? Worth checking they arent less if its just what you have been told by the PO.

What about Sprintparts? They may be able to source a replacement in the right size.
ooer! missus!
I'm 99% sure they are +0.060" but I'm going to check first (should have them out tomorrow evening all being well), I was going to ask Sprintparts when I was 100% certain.

Re: Gapless Ring's.
SAAB 99's are deff 1985 cc, Try parts for SAAB, always had a reasonable resonse from them on my 900. In fact, you may even find 900 Rings (non 16v) are the same. They didnt alter the capacity

Re: Gapless Ring's.
They may be a 2 litre, but wasn't the capacity increased from the 1850 origin by stroke rather than bore?

2 sorts....
Saab used 2 different blocks. Early cars are common with our slant 4's. I think they come in 2 litre form with the early block. If so they have the same stroke as TR7 and Sprint, which are just bored out over the 1850.
The later Saabs have the different block and I dont think they have that much in common with ours.
Re: Worn Ring
I got the head off tonight & after cleaning the piston crown I noted the figure 1.016 stamped on the top. Now usually you see +0.20, +0.40 etc. so I assume this is metric, which equates to 0.040". Just nod yer head if you agree. Which means I can get them from Rimmers. But the ones Rimmers sell are "county" & I've heard they aren't the best ones to get...but I don't know, so need some feedback from those of you who have bought rings in the not too distant past.
