Differentials
Quick question - and this isnt a wanted ad!!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

My next thing on my wish list is an LSD but they are as rare as golden rocking horse poo. Does a Sprint share its diff with any other models?
Differentials, LSD & Phantomgrip
Yes, the diff mechanical are identical to the TR4/5/6 and 2000/2500/2.5 saloons. You can change diff ratios from early 2000 cars - manual are about 4.1 and auto about 3.7. All the rest are I believe same as Sprint - 3.45. Not that this info will help as they are all hard to find or expensive new.

The Salisbury LSD are available new at UKP695, Sprintparts in Sydney have some locally made ones at A$1695.
Quaiffe LSD are unobtainable and they will only make more in batches of 20. One of the Dutch racers was trying to get a group together at one time for a bulk purchase.

There is another type available in the USA, the phantomgrip - www.phanto ...
I know nothing about these, but was referred to the site recently. Including extra springs the unit appears to be little over US$300 which is very attractive. I am very tempted to get one. Anyone ever heard of them?
too good to be true?
Seems like a bargain if itworks as advertised.

Re: too good to be true?
Sounds like a sound idea - why replace a whole diff unit when you can modify a normal diff at that price? I may be interested in it as a winter project if you want to go halves on shipping. Shame i didnt know about it a few weeks ago when I was in the USA!!

£600 to £700 quid is about the going rate for an LSD for any car so the Salisbury unit isnt bad value.

I saw the aussie one with interest on triumphowners.com but shipping costs would be megabucks!!

I've also sent an inquiry to Tran-X to see what they can do - I've heard they might do batches of 10 (better than 20!).

I might have to do it fairly soom as looking at a Video of my car at Castle Coombe last saturday there is a nasty whine coming the axle (couldnt hear it with a crash helmet on though!). Must add that to my website.
Re: too good to be true?
I got a quote from Quaife in the US about a year ago:

Quote:
Thank you for your interest in Quaife. The ATB diff for a Dolomite Sprint sells for US$845.00 We do not have this diff in stock at the moment. I will get back to you Monday with stock advice from the UK office. If in stock in the UK, it could be added to a shipment leaving next week, due to arrive here the following week. Shipment to Australia could be arranged via UPS or Fedex.

Having said that, i'm going to line up for a LSD from Sprintparts. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">
Re: Quaife & PhantomGrip
I contacted Redline - they don't have any stock on the shelf and of course we know Quaife don't have any either - so no luck there.
There is a good reference to PhantomGrip that explains how it works:
<a href="http://www.paterson5.freeserve.co.uk/ph ...
and one on Quaife:
<a href="http://www.advanceevolution.co.uk/vw/qu ...

I think I will give the PhantomGrip a try, but am finding getting a reply to my emails difficult.
Re: Quaife & PhantomGrip
I'm finding the same problem with Phantomgrip, they dont seem to want to respond to us limeys. I reckon there would be at least 5 people who would go for it.

Are there any USA/Canada owners out there who want to set up an export route??
Re: Quaife & PhantomGrip
A friend of mine who looks after a Sebring Sprite race car recently invested in a PhantomGrip "LSD" and destroyed it on its first outing. Hard to recommend.
Re: Quaife & PhantomGrip
I suppose the Quaife units are pitched at the price they are for a reason........

Do we know anyone who builds a decent diff? The one in the Stag is now approaching ear-defenders-required levels of shaggedness.
