Insurance

#1 Post by MaddMart » Thu Jan 15, 2004 5:05 pm

I take it when insuring your modified track car for normal road use you just tell the ins. co. what mods. you have made & they will adjust the premium accordingly. But what about trackday ins. ?? Can you get insurance to cover personal injury and/or your car? Are you covered for personal injury when you enter a track event?

Do they get a lot of calls from just outside circuits for recovery?

Yes, Yes and maybe

For road use just insure it as normal and declare the mods done.

For track use you can get cover but as you'd expect its usually pretty expensive. I was told by somebody its only really worthwhile if the car is worth in excess of £10K which rules out just about any Dolomite.

Some events over 'on the day' insurance but study it carefully - the excesses might make it a waste of money.

Generally its best to accept that if you or someone else bends your car on the track, tough, its your problem. Of course it has been know for cars to hit lampposts shortly after being on track - how clumsy!

Some sort of Public Liability insurance is usually held by the circuit or organiser but I dont know how far it goes as every motorsport event you goes to has those 'motorsport is dangerous...at your own risk' signs everywhere.

You can get personal injury insurance from several specialists.

There are others but they escape me at the moment.

Dave mentioned a company to me that will do on the day insurance at Anglesey for £52.00.

Don't have the details but it might be worth posing the q to him.

I'm going to do the, if it gets bent, I'll just have to cry about it approach. People shouldn't be getting that close on the track day anyway. Practice is probably the most likely time when you are going to have a prang in Sprints. Hill climbs should be pretty risk free unless you roll it I suppose. Your thoughts Graeme?
Dave mentioned it to me - i thinks Footman James are offering it only if you are already insured with them. I'd be interested to know what it actually covers and what the excess is.

I dont see the point unless your car is particularly valuable.

Hillclimbs and Sprints are almost always without incident however hillclimbing can cause a more serious prang due to the lack of run offs on most tracks. I've had a few near misses on the first practice runs on a cold track but nothing worse than some of the scrapes I used to get into on the road!

To be honest, your probably more likely to prang it on the road where your concentration may be lower on unfamiliar roads. Except that is the Castle Coombe action days where there have been some eyewateringly expensive accidents such as a BMW M Coupe colliding with a Lola replica at the last action day. Ouch!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x"> I'm seriously considering passing on the Castle Coombe action days this year - too much upoliced dodgy driving from Max Power knobed's has been going on there in the past couple of years.
castle coombe

#6 Post by Dave » Fri Jan 16, 2004 3:29 pm

I went to a trackday a year and a half ago and it looked like there were some people there with an altenative approach. Buy or steal a car.go to trackday drive like a moron with O mechanical sympathy.abandon vehicle at end of day. This applied to a couple of guys in a very well worn volkswagen golf. Never seen so much tyre smoke and understeer! Eventually they understeered of at quarry much to everyones relief as they had been dropping coolant and oil round the circuit. Saw the car later as just about everyone had left, all the windows open key in ignition no one around.
Do you have to produce an Mot?

Have a look at some of the climbs there might be noone else to hit but some of them are very picturesque ie lots to hit if you go off. Have a look at Shelsey Walsh

Yep - hillclimbs can be a bit hairy.

As for track days, not once have i been asked to produce an MOT or a driving licence at a track day which you'd think was the minimum requirement.

The Castle Coombe days are such good money earners for the circuit and crashes are so entertaining for spectators why would they want to put off anyone from going on track that might cause some excitement? A lack of incidents might put off the bloodthirsty punters.

I wish they'd do something to control it at Coombe before someone gets killed. To stop letting 35 cars on track at time might be a start.

variations

#9 Post by Dave » Fri Jan 23, 2004 3:44 pm

in speed at that coombe day were quite alarming. Why they don't exercise a bit of discretion is beyond me. IIRC the disclaimer would not protect them either if you could show that they had been negligent in allowing someone on the track. Some of them didn't look safe to be on the road let alone being caned to within an inch of its life on the trck. That volkswagen had bald rear tyres with wire poking out for a start!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

I got a quote for 'on event' insurance the other day.

Insured value £8500
Excess £1000
Premium £383.00

I thought, that's not bad and then thought I'd better confirm that that was indeed for one season. Reply was 'no' thats for one race event.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

10 races in one season = half the cost of the car! Shocking. How do they do it and make a profit?
£1383 an event if you make claim!

A lot of dosh but if you've got to look at it from their point of view - the risk is probably a million times the risk of a road car getting damaged.

Like I said before, unless the car is extremely valuable, best policy is to get some life/injury cover for yourself and take any car damage on the chin.

Its only money and metal after all.
Insurance

Just been on the phone to FJ to insure my other Sprint. They said I can add it to my existing policy. I told them about the mods. Uprated suspension & Weber carbs. That'll be an extra £47.25 on your existing policy sir. What if I take the front & rear bumpers off....five minutes later....yes that's fine but that will be £63 instead of £47.25. How do they work these prices out ?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

I think they have some sort of 'in house voodoo' team that they consult. Or they make one of those clicker hexagonal paper things like you did at school and write various price increases on each face, throw a dice and away you go.

Must take the monotany out of the day for them.

Seriously though, a friend of mine worked for churchill and they will have some matrix showing them the incidence of bumperless vehicles likely to make a claim and the average cost of each claim versus total vehicle value. Its a statisticians paradise.

Still not bad what they have quoted though really.
