How's the XE engine conversion coming on Smifter? Just got myself a Manta 5 speed box off good old ebay. Just need an engine to go in front of it now. It'll be interesting to hear how you put it all together. Are you mounting the engine off the subframe? What are you doing for fuel and ignition?
If your XE'ing it try and get an early engine has these have nice bits like forged pistons, cosworth cast heads and light flywheels.

I've gathered all the bits together for the conversion but probably wont get round to starting work properly until october.

I want to mount the engine as far back in the engine bay as possible. I order to do this I've got a shallow steel big wing sump and I'm chopping up an escort cross member to mount the engine from using XE/escort mounts. Its either the shallow sump or dry sumping which is beyond my budget.

I've measured it up and I reckon It'll be better to mount the engine direct to the chassis rather than use the Sprint subframe unless you want the weight all over the front wheels like a Sprint is normally.

For exhausts I've got a 4-2-1 2.25" outlet large bore RWD tubular manifold from Yukspeed. due to the space restrictions the passenger side floor of the car or the rear of the subframe may need modifying to suit

For fuel and ignition I'll be dumping the standard XE set up which is too restrictive and using megasquirt'n'edis engine management fuellng through Yamaha R1 throttle bodies and a small dose of Nitrous. I plan to fit an innovate wideband Lambda sensor into the system so i can accurately tune it myself.

The cheapest way of fuel and ignition is get a non injected 1.6 chavalier dizzy and run 45's but I fancy going more high tech! Plus the dizzy would hit the bulkhead.

I take it you've got a Manta 1.8 getrag gearbox - GTE boxes wont fit. You'll also need a manta prop to join to a Sprint prop and either a 1.8 manta clutch assembly or use an XE clutch cover with a calibra turbo clutch plate. You'll also need to get a spigot bearing to fit in the flywheel end of the crank - they cost a tenner from Yukspeed.

Cooling is using a Honda Civic Type R rad, I keep meaning to post a pic of it as it fits very snugly between the chassis rails.

Its not going to be too easy but thats half the fun<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Oh dear! (or words to that effect) I've got a GTE gearbox. Good job it didn't cost me anything except £20 petrol to go and get it. Why won't it fit?

I was only thinking of mounting to the subframe so that the car could be returned to standard later, but without seeing how it lines up in the engine bay I have no idea whether this is feasible. The distributor hitting the bulkhead is well known. I've assembled a Megajolt system which I could use with carbs, or do a megasquirt with throttle bodies.

How much was the exhaust manifold? Is it mild steel? Any pictures? Cheers,
Manifold was £160 and is mild steel

Although its the same internals The GTE box only fits the opel CIH engines, not the later OHC engines - its a totally different bolt pattern.
