Brands Hatch 27/28th May 2006
Just to give you guys a heads up, the next round of the Classic Touring Cars is at Brands Hatch.

www.motorsportvision.co.uk/brands-hatch ...

There are going to be at least 5 Dolomite Sprints racing in the Post Historics. Obviously that depends upon the attrition rate in qualifying but fingers crossed, we will all make the grid.

This meeting is to say the least a phenominal event as a competitor, as a spectator its just as good.

Last year they had over 30,000 people watching. Loads to do for kids as well with a funfare and stuff going on which is free once you have paid the entrance fees. Racing on both days but last year my car was dead on the saturday so couldn't make the Sunday race. Same story for a number of people so the Saturday would probably be the one to do.

I'm really looking forward to this. The car will be done and I'm looking forward to seeing if the cam change has made it a little friendlier to drive!
Re: Brands Hatch 27/28th May 2006
Kind of.

STR91 spec cam (Its actually the TT10106 that I got from Jod).

Overdrive on 2nd (Did that all myself with help from Martin)

Dual water temp/volt guage from SPA to replace my smiths capillary guage that died.

To do next week. Arrange to get side exit exhaust fixed up at Custom Chrome and then a rolling road session on Thursday to set up and re-jet if necessary to suit cam.

Depending on what's happening in my life next year, I might get everything set up so that I can use an STR139 but I need 7800rpm reliable to get the most from one of them. My ceiling is 7000rpm currently.

Shame you can't make it but I forgive you!
So racing on the Sunday we have
Group 1 Touring
Austin Healeys
Classic FF2000
Thoroughbred Sportscars (inc TR2's, 4's and 6's)

Only just realised all this!
If it's big Healeys it should be a good race. Huge excess of power over grip.
That's another job down. That's two guages that I have fitted all by myself and they work!! You can have hours of fun scrolling through the menu adjusting stuff.

I'm booked into www.cu ...
on Thursday am for the side exit exhaust jobby and then off to Milton Keynes for 2pm to see these people <a href="http://www.racingdevelopments.com/rolli ...
for yet another set-up.

It all seems to be coming together now and I have high hopes for a decent midfield finish!
Went to a different rolling road today just to get things set-up before Sunday. This is with the TT10106 and the new side exit zorst.

I have another power figure to throw into the mix, make of it what you will. This figure is purely an 'at the wheels figure' as they don't do all that flywheel corrected guestimate stuff. 155bhp.

So, Pete Baldwins gave me 220bhp (cough) Flywheel corrected
Aldon's rollers gave me 167bhp (crys) Flywheel corrected
Racing developments gives me 155bhp RWBHP.

I had a quick blat up the road on the industrial estate and from a standstill I would guess the 0-60 was about 6 secs based on my TVR doing it in 4 secs so I would extrapulate that the 155 rwbhp is about right. And yes, I am wondering what the hell I spent all that money on.

Still, I'm really looking forward to Sunday. I'm really pleased with the way the car seems to be driving now that it has a suitable cam in it.
Re: ......
Well, I've just got back. Engine behaved itself, didn't spin it BUT, still finished last of those that finished which was a bit embarrasing! Didn't plan on that happening again after Silverstone but never mind.

I was lucky to race really, so I should be thankful for small mercies. Just as we were about to drive out onto the track for qualifying, I could feel my foot getting wet and I could hear a hissing sound. I just thought, "Oh no, what is it now?!" I looked down and could see extunguishant spraying out of the nozzle and then noticed the engine bay frothing. Quickly turned the engine off, got out and started to question why the hell I keep comong back to race-tracks.

My electrical Lifeline plumbed in system fired for no reason. The marshall in pit lane said that he had never seen that happen before. Well, it had to happen to me first didn't it!

I then went on a 2 hour mission to either buy a new one or borrow a system from another competitor in a later race. To cut a long story short(er), I was allowed to qualify out of session with a hand held extinguisher (which have been outlawed as of 2006.)

So, having done the minimum 3 laps with the Classic Thunder cars, I had to come in and then race from last place on the grid.

The Race.

Nice clean start from position 21. By the end of lap 1 I was in 18th having taken advantage of the Anglia and Lotus Cortina in front of me taking a poor line around a Ford Mustang that may have missed a gear out of Graham hill bend. I was a bit shocked as my plan was to get 4 laps or so under my belt before really trying anything. I then spent the next couple of laps looking in my mirrors thinking, "Are they going quicker than me?" Sure enough, they were as the Mustang came past me, the Cortina retired. I then had the Anglia of Nick Jones behind me for a few laps. He had made a couple of seconds up by not slowing for a waved yellow flag which had been raised due to Trevor Pickard going into the tyre wall. After making a poor exit at clearways, I allowed him an easy pass. I also thought it might give me something to focus on and try to work out where I could pass him back.

The gap between us stayed fairly constant at around 1 sec but I was noticeably slower through the corners. However, I was able to post my fastest lap 2 tenths quicker than the Anglia so all was not lost. I was 3-4 secs a lap slower than the fastest Sprints so I've definitely some work to do STILL!!

The good news. Water temperature didn't go above 75 degrees during the race. I didn't even need the fan. It's the first time I've been able to give the volvo rad a decent test with a guage that works. Oil temp didn't go over 85 degrees. Overdrive on 2nd was excellent. I didn't actually use 4th gear for the whole race instead electing to use overdrive 3rd which was good for around 115mph before braking into paddock hill. Also, my car sounds awesome on the video! It's up from 99db at 4800rpm to 105db.

So, a mixed bag really. Someone has a had a moan about my lack of inner lights which I now have to rectify along with my slightly protruding radiator. Personally, I think it's a little pathetic and if they want to enforce the regs on my car then they should do it with all aspects of the regs for all competitors.

Peace out...

PS. Thanks for Phil for helping me wield the spanners and a thank-you to Martin Bellinger for popping over and saying Hi. Also met Andy Cripps aka Moosehunter.
Darn it, blast and to hell with it all...... I had the flights booked and was itching to see you guys in action. Unfortunately the ex pulled a nuttsy on me and refused to take the dog for the weekend.... Rabies laws prevent me bringing him over so I was stuck! Where can i get the list of dates for the Historic series and where you're intending to appear fellas? I'll HAVE TO make one of 'em!
I'm looking at my rolling shell in my folks garden and the stripped engine chez moi and wondering.......mmmmmmmm

Just a quick one. I don't think animals/pets are allowed at motorsport events here in the UK.

Scott,

Been dying to get to a PC but been denied the chance until this morning.

THe kids and I had a wonderful day. I attended the same meeting last year and could not believe how much fewer people there were this year - last time was rammed. Still, that made it much more pleasant to get around and I especially enjoyed being able to get the "guinea seats" in the grandstand. All told some great machinery on show and some great races.

It was so nice to meet you Scott and to put face to name. The car looked stunning and was imho easily the best turned out Dolly. It was really good to see so many Sprints (I counted 5) having a go.

From the stand, your car seemed to sit higher than the others, and this may or may not have contributed to its being perceptibly slower through the corners. Also it made a totally different noise to the other Dollys, especially on the overrun as you lifted of at the end of the straight prior to Paddock Hill, when the engine note became distinctly 'throbby'. Flat out I agree - it sounded awesome!

I think you were a brave bloke to take on guys who clearly have been doing it a lot longer than you, and I don't think you should feel any shame in finishing at the back of the field. I did come around to the paddock again later on but you were not about.

All told an excellent day out. The kids loved having someone to cheer for!!
