Rockingham 25th June (This Sunday)

#1 Post by Carsreunited » Tue Jun 20, 2006 2:34 pm

Now I know there is football on but if you fancy a break, I'll be doing a race at Rockingham, no doubt I will finish last again as I'm going to be racing all sorts of stuff including MGF's.

Full details here:

I heard about it through word of mouth and couldn't resist a 15 minute qually and 2 twenty minute races for £150 (including my own pit garage!)
What a day. I'm not sure I'm cut out for racing, I'm not lucky enough!

I had my extinguisher and control box checked out afyter the last one set itself off. The diagnosis was that everything was fine. So imagine my suprise when l installed it last night and it immediately discharged itself again! Somebody at Lifeline is going to get an earbashing tomorrow.

So, I go to Rockingham and throw myself at the mercy of the scrutineers. Luckily they were in a benevolent mood and allowed me to mount a hand-held extinguisher. Nextthing to do was the noise test. At Brands Hatch it was 105db.Today, I'm told that it is 113db! After a bit of head scratching they tell me to put it up on a 4 poster ramp as they think that it might be blowing. So, I do that, we get underneath the car and the system was as it was fitted 3 weeks ago. No blows whatsoever. The guy goes to put the ramp down and one of the posts won't drop down! So, my car is now stuck 10 feet up in the air!

More headscratching and 20 mins later, the safety overide is fooled by jamming bits open with bottle tops! Car now on the floor and I'm told to go out and qualify.

Qualification goes pretty well and I end up being 1 second slower than an MGF cup car and a couple of seconds quicker than 2 XR3i's, all of which are on rubber better than mine so I was quite pleased.

Race comes and we do a rolling start which was different. After two laps, I go into a left hand bend at about 60 and the next thing I see out of my window is my rear offside wheel bouncing happily along into the gravel trap. The car then pirrhoettes quickly like one of those skid pan machines. I end up facing the wrong way on the racing line and the race gets red flagged. Game over for me!

Upon inspection, two of the studs had completely sheered off and the othertwo had stripped their threads as a result of the cornering force. I'm just glad it didn't happen at 120mph on the banking with concrete barriers to my right!

I'm being punished for something!
Yeah, keep at it. Law of averages say one day you've gotta cop some luck of the unfamiliar variety. Jigsaw stock studs.
Will keep at it but sometimes you just think, "Why me!?!"

Damage is negligible. The trailing arm upright bit has a little less metal than it had. Probably the cheapest fix ever really. £10 will cover it.
Blimey Scott you do have some luck!

This fire extinguisher stuff is simply incredible, and then to put the tin hat on it being overtaken by your own rear wheel (always a five pence/fifty pence moment).

I have to agree with Julian and Adam though - keep going because by the law of averages you are due some luck soon. Your car looks too good to keep on hating you in this way too!
