Alfa 147 GTA (AWESOME)
Vauxhall/Opel Omega MVI (a real Q car)
Good god Al - Rover Citycar - what is it with you and duff rovers! They are pitiful grotesque things with not a single speck of imaginative design and certainly not worthy of a rover badge!

Just Look at it - it gives small children nightmares. Its not even really a Rover but a rebadged Tata (so say ta ta to it as you wont want to see one again ever after you next get stuck behind Great Uncle Albert in one doing 20 mph on an A road on the way back from the local jumble sale).

Except for that one I agree with all of them so far - I agree with Jonners on Calibras but only in Turbo 4x4 or v6 guise.
Totally with you on the Pug 406 coupe - they do a 2.2 HDI version for cheapskates like me which I may consider when I have to say goodbye to the toaster.

I'd like to throw a spanner in the works - forget anything which is a performance car, megabucks luxury car, sports car or supercar as its almost a given that it will become a collectible classic car even if they are worth bugger all in 20 years.

What run of the mill current(ish) cars are destined to become classic?

My Potential candidates are

Audi A2 - a lot of engineering in a little car
Smart City Car / 4-2 - they make so much sense in city centres, bloody horrible anywhere else
VW Lupo
New Fiat Panda (especially 4x4)
Fiat Multipla (the early model)
Jag X type - proof that all fleet cars dont need to look the same.
Renault Modus
Rover75 /MG ZT - so much nicer than the dull 25/45 stuff
Volvo S60 - when the volvo design office first forgot the setsquare
Citroen C2
Alfa 147 and 156 of course - even the basic versions look jaw dropping - especially the 156

<a href="http://www.smifter1971.pwp.blueyonder.c ... >Smifter's Dolomite Sprint Website

Featherweight 1974 Dolomite Sprint - Soon to be XE'd, NOS'd, Megasquirted and 5 linked Lash up to scare myself (and my wallet) senseless

2004 Smart Roadster (company car!!) - 698cc of turbo'd adrenaline fuelled rollerskate - destined to classic status thanks to Daimler Chrysler bean counters.

1997 Audi A4 2.6 to chill out after the above and fill with baby products.....

2005 Trek 1400 (ok its not a car but still fast) -
a bit like Lance Armstrong but slower and fatter

...nothing with excessive electrics, air flow meters, cats etc. Once its beyond the realms of home maintenance it hasn't a hope!

I love causing mischief!!!
Smifter, I enclosed the Rover City Car for the very reasons normal people like you and I would condemn them.
I totally agree about performance derivatives of models being obvious, but again I did this to get artistic juices flowing. What suprised me was the run of the mill Italian car, Fiat Panda popping up twice, I have to condemn the Calibra ( it's my thread!!!) as its a crap version of a Cavalier....!
Was however chuffed that the Alfa 147/156 appeared more than once BEAUTIFUL car's failed buy the dealer network.
Who put original Fiat Multipla? Good concept, poor execution of styling, that even Fiat admitted to.
Fiat Coupe, say no more.....
Next question then..... Are Italian designer's the best???
I actually admire the Citroen 2CV and Renault 4, for being the French alternative to the Fiat 500!
classics

#8 Post by SprintMWU773V » Thu Dec 01, 2005 8:12 pm

I'd like to see the MG ZS become a classic, the MG badge should help to secure it's place in the UK hall of fame (or shame!). Great car but looks like it crashed into Halfords window.

MX-5 has to be a future classic especially the early ones, just a clone of an MGB though only this one works.

Any Ferrari, Lambo etc but too pricey and thus unobtainable.

The Maestro already has a cult following and are disappearing fast.

205 GTi, nice car spoilt by appalling cabin quality

Citroen BX, last of the weird Citroen's?

Focus RS, great car but still a Ford and FWD

Renault Clio Williams, just the 1st one thoigh not 2 or 3.

Other than those most modern things are pretty dull in my opinion. I agree with Alun with regards to complicated electrics, cats etc just makes things harder to fix.

As for the Shity Rover we deserve it for sending the Indians the Morris Oxford all those years ago. Could have been a good car at £5k but at £9k who was the target customer exactly, most traditional Rover buyers deserted the brand when the metro was dropped and bought Kia's instead. Mind you if rumor were to be believed an MG version with a turbo could have been fun.

My full list would be bigger, but I like the idea of setting to one side sports cars/handmade low volume types and other such vehicles which are destined to become "classics" in any event, through rarity if nothing else.

So run of the mill it is. Here goes, in no particular order at all:

Ford Focus Mk 1 (All except the Max Power RS but especially the 2.0 Zetec)
BMW 330d (The first really fast sporting diesel)
Citroen C6 (It will go wrong, it will lose money like falling masonry, but look at it)
Merc A Class Mk I (made every conventional small car look passe)
Toyota Aygo (banzai three pot, built well, fun, 60mpg)
Discovery 3 (nuff said really)
Renault Espace (introduced a whole class of car)
Renault Scenic MkI (introduced a whole class of car...)
Mazda MX5 (not rare, not expensive, and all the better for it)
Alfa 147/new 159 (great styling looking for sensible electrics and a dealer network who gives a toss)
Smart City Coupe/ForTwo/Whatever they call it now (we will all see the sense one day)

Martin

1968 Triumph 1300FWD
2002 BMW 320d
2002 Renault Scenic

Future Classics

#15 Post by John Skinner » Tue Dec 06, 2005 6:18 pm

Sticking to affordable future classics - no Porche etc. The sort of stuff that you will find in Practical Classics.
In no particular order:

Ford Puma
Vauxhall Tigra (if you can't afford the above)
Smart anything
The new Mini
The not so new anymore new Beetle
Honda s2000 (if they ever get cheap)
Clio V6
Pug 1007 (A strangely overpriced 107 so will be rare)
Citroen C3 Pluriel

My wife recently got a Suzuki Cappuccino so that has to be on the list. It has all the traits of a classic: rust, fumes in the cockpit, no brakes, faulty rear demister, hopeless stereo with speakers near the accelerator pedal etc. etc. In fact I'm suprised it hasn't got a Triumph badge. Maybe it fell off...
