Alternative 'Board'

#1 Post by MalcGE » Sat Jan 14, 2006 10:38 am

Does the 'Alternative' discussion forum still exist and if so what is the URL. It occured to me that when eeziboard 'goes off on one' it would be handy to have the alternative in our favourites

The recent crash was nothing to the barf-o-rama that went on I think around the middle of last year. Basically somebody launched an attack against ezboard destroying many boards. EZboards backup procedures proved to be totally inadequate meaning we and many other communities lost a huge amount of archived wisdom. This is the reason we have duplicate boards and archive boards with little or nothing in them. Thousands of posts were lost. The club board administrators did what they could to straighten out the mess after ezboard declared they had restored all they could but it was never going to get back to what we had.

Several people, myself included, advocated binning ezboard and using phpbb instead. phpbb is a free to use open source bulletin board system, safe to say there are more phpbb boards out there than any other. Lewis stepped up very quickly and set up a board as a test. After a few versions we arrived at what you see now if you follow the link above.

Apart from the reliability of having it in our own control there are two significant advantages to phpbb. First, the administrator can back it up. Lewis does this regularly, for added security if club starts to use it in preference to here I've offered to back up up daily too. Second, phpbb is extendible. Whatever feature you want can be written and added. 95% of the time someone will have thought of whatever you come up with first and have written it already. For example wouldn't it be handy to be able to copy the whole of our sleazyboards into phpbb? 2 minutes searching proved its already been written, neither Lewis nor I have got around to trying it. Yet. It can't transfer user data of course because we don’t have access to that.

Safe to say that the subject will be discussed again in the future! We need to go about it properly though which I think means preparing a proposal to present at the next AGM. There is a cost to the club in using ezboard and a part of the cost is related to the volume of traffic so we can't go 'teleporting' or transferring to phpbb en mass without discussing the matter first.

Think thats about the story.
There is only 'one' TDC board and it is this one. Just occasionally, an ezbuggett doth strike, and when it does it would be handy to have somewhere else to go. Of course, the grass often looks greener OTOS (and is often claimed to be) but as we can see, even the Dark Side has its problems
Yes, but I'll stick a post up like that when the forums had a 5 minute downtime whilst I've reset the server, so <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> ....as I don't want people to feel uninformed about what's going on!

And yes, this IS the board <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> Mine just exists as a prototype....

I prefer Lewis's forum <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Take that how you like. Its a pity the majortiy don't use it. It's the only reason I don't use it, and probably the reason the majortiy don't use it!!!

But then BetaMax was better than VHS and Mac is better than PC, but what do the majority use?

There is always the Club Triumph board to hijack. If it all goes west again you'll find me on there...temporarily; I go on every now and again to entice the uninformed over to us<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Have you joined the Club yet Lewis? Could we rely on the commitment of a non-member for our discussion board? You might sell your car tomorrow and that would be it?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">

To Reiterate

The joy of phpbb is once you've got the downloaded database, you can go forth and stick all the existing posts into your own copy of the software.

Sounds a bit vague, but basically anyone with the right access to the phpbb board in question can download the entire contents of said board as a file. This file can then be used to "restore" all those posts to any board running compatible software (it's easy to use data from an older version in a newer one, but a pain in the rear using posts from a new version in an older one). So, let's say Lewis gets tired of Dollies and loses interest in running the forum, or even having it on his webspace (I think as we're mostly Brits on here a Brit based server would be a better plan anyway). All that's needed is for someone else to install the software on their webspace, and have him email the backed up database. Five minutes later and you've got the whole thing back up again, the only change being a change in url (web address) that would have to be altered in any links from the homepage to the board.

I'm probably making it sounds more complicated than it is - Basically, if using a phpbb system the server goes down, or a change of host is desired, everything can be moved over to someone/ somewhere else. Unlike wheeziboard, where you're tied to their pricing structures, there backups (which have been proven to be flaky at best), their everything really...
