money to burn?
Thought this was a joke first but BP have just launched a new fuel, Ultimate Unleaded 102. The 102 refers to the octane value of the fuel. Before you rush out and buy some a word of caution. Firstly it's only available in 6 forecourts and secondly it costs £2.42 PER LITRE!

Queues of 1 or 2 people a day are fighting to buy it at that price. One of which in the article I read drove a Citroen Saxo no less and he knows a lot about these things but not enough to realise his car doesn't have a knock sensor and therefore has wasted his money as his car just thinks it's 95RON!
Wot a waste....
All my cars are quite happy on 95...well apart from the P6 that can be made to pink in certain conditions, but actually upping to the higher ocatne doesnt make a lot of difference. I think the mechanical advace springs are weak and its advancing to early.
re:
Does anyone know why when Unleaded was launched the RON was 95 when 4 star was about 99? I'm sure there's a reason for it. I remember when unleaded first came out and my Dad put a sticker on his car saying it ran on the stuff which was novel at the time. Also made us get rid of the Volvo which could only run on 4 star, did 22mpg and it was getting expensive as fueel for it was about 56p a litre!
I tend to just use Optimax with a bottle of Millers now and then (find the Castrol stuff doesn't agree with any of mine).
Not particularly impressed with Tescos 99, then again, it's all probably in my head seeing as most differences are probably due to weather more than anything

Not so silly really
Joe Average isn't going to buy the stuff for his high performance cheapo hatchback or even a full on nutter spec Dolomite. That's not the target customer.

Its going to be wealthy types driving Astons, Ferraris and 911 turbos on weekends when the driver is on leave and a few hundred quid on a fuel for a boost in power is pennies. If you can afford to spend £100K on an impractical sports car then fuel cost is irrelevant (which is why I think there should be a super super tax on such cars - charge £1000 a year to tax a F430, Vanquish etc which is small beer in the grand scheme of owning such cars and hopefully Joe Average would pay a bit less to compensate).

The demand for such a fuel on forecourts goes to show how the UK's wealthy are only getting wealthier and we have more millionaires than ever before. And most of them are probably new money plumbers with bad taste

The bloke in the Saxo was just a dickhead (well he drove a Saxo).

No No No....
You dont want to over tax the rich....

Its the poor you want to tax off the road. WHo are the least desiravbel road users? Two answers, doddery pensioners (rich ones have a chaufferur) and incomeptent youth, especally in the 17-21 bracket... If you up the basic cost both groups go down in road use cos they cant afford to drive. Then other types like chav single mums who dont strap their oiks in on the way to Aldi, the uneployed and the feckless and useless also get taxed off the road.

Leaving more space for the deserving...like Smifter and me...and all of you of course (Adam and Lewis excepted sorry)

Basically anyone slightly less richer than me should be on the bus or walking...

(Seriously tongue in cheek...but you all know me well enough by now.)
Re: No No No....
Can't say I agree with you Smifter. Yer average supercar driver will just buy the most expensive at whatever petrol station he happens to be at. He won't spend an extra minute of his life going to a BP instead of whetever turns up. 75% of that stuff will go in chav charriots and another 20% in scoobies and imprezzas. At least the latter to will make use of it.

As for supertaxing F40s, do they damage the road more than a saxo? No. So why exactly should they pay more to use exactly the same bit of road? The fairest way would be to scrap road tax entirely and increase petrol tax. The more you use the roads the more you've worn them and the more you pay for the upkeep.

Which is a nice little utopian idea based on the hopelessly wrong premise that our government actually uses fuel and car tax to pay for roads rather than propping up the rest of their cockups. That unfortunately applies regardless of colour.

Jon, you jest but I wouldn't put it past any English government. They are all increasingly target fixated. They could easily set themselves a vehicles-on-the-road reduction target. It's then far easier to tax the poor off the road than the rich.... Again, I attach no particular colour to that potential.
I've been saying this for years, but then we would probably get the situation like back in the 70s where chavs & the like will go round syphoning petrol from cars.

Vehicle reduction target...
Its called the MOT test.

The VOSA have now imposed such a stupid regime on testing vehicles that there arent enough hours in the day to test and retest them all. Ergo if your tax is out and you cant get an MoT in time...your nicked son...
and your car in the crusher...

The solution of course is to desynchronise MoT from Tax...
Damage to Roads is no longer the argument for Road Tax Bands as it is accepted as irrelevant. Hence CO2 emissions are used to encourage cleaner transport.

Saxo VTR = 159g/km

Ferrari 360 Modena = 440g/km

Should they pay proportionally more tax??? I'm not a hessian wearing tree hugger but I think so. Its not as if someone who can afford to run a Ferrari would give a toss.

Look at it another way.

Would you be happy to pay the same council tax for a 3 bed semi in Hull as a 3 bedroom apartment in Kensington?
How happy are you that you pay the same rate of road tax on your Sprint as a £130K supercar?
Fair point.

What if the saxo hasn't seen a service in years and is driven by a twat and so gets mid teens to the gallon. Meanwhile the modena is serviced every couple of k or annually and is driven like a granny and so gives 30 to the gallon. Who should pay more now?

By having it all on fuel you encourage everyone to drive less, drive economically and maintain their cars. By having tax fixed to a test done at introduction of the vehicle you ignore a hell of a lot of variables introduced by time and the driver.

You probably don't want to start me off on council tax. Suffice to say I believe it should be linked to the level of service provided, postcode should only be a factor where it affects the cost of providing the service.

I really don't care that I pay the same road tax for my sprint as a supercar owner pays. He cops it in the wallet every time he fills up, every time he needs a tyre, an exhaust, or a service or lightbulb or insurance or..... Every time he gets mugged for one of these at huge cost the goverment slaps VAT on it, which pays (in theory) for services from which I benefit. He is already paying more into the system than me.
