Freedom of Speech?

#1 Post by alun n » Wed May 31, 2006 7:05 pm

An interesting observation from recent posting on the 'main' board.

Arguably posted in the wrong place, but the vehement shouting down of this "nutter's" opinion intrigues me... I don't hold with the method of their witness necessarily, indeed I can see it as counter productive, but I respect their right to exercise it as they see fit.

Agreement to disagree is one thing, bolstered by lively debate of course. A no platform policy was last supported by the nazis (apart from within the labour party over recentl years that is).

Surely in a public forum within a democratic country the post in question should simply be moved to the appropriate section rather than deleted?

Why does an idividual's opinion or belief need to be censored? What harm does the post present to YOU? What danger lurks within? Is it so sinister or evil?

The reaction to a similar post based on the tenets of Islam would be interesting to observe!

The post does not present any threat or problem to me, just a little inconvenience when trying to scan the board for news.

The mas..... comment, puely to redress the balance, with tongue in cheek, as all those who know me will understand.

This 'tbird' poster has posted this kind of thing before. If the topic had not been deleted when this was discussed previously, we could have linked the new post to the old discussion - but we all know the new poster will never return to the forum to see how the debate is progressing.

Whilst I accept the sentiment of the post and elements of the message within, I feel the method of delivery of his message is akin to the 'take out a massive loan' leaflets that fall from your copy of Practical Classics magazine each month. Not really why you are on this board.

Move it to the appropriate section of the forum by all means, he is entitled to his freedom to post whatever he wants to. But we are not trying to convert people to drive Fords either, are we.
Measured Response.

I will not discuss my views on deep subjects such as this on an open forum, the reason is simple.
You can not read people's facial expression, and with my sense of humour that is dangerous as it can lead to all sorts of misunderstanding's.
I have a mind to PM this person with my views and belief's and minister in a similar vain.
Jod, don't be so certain said person is not watching!

Once again sorry if previous posts offended.
Not so much the content of the message - as you know, I try to be a Christian.

It was posted in the wrong place but also, as has already been said, this person has no intention of responding to anything we put about his post. He is posting the same message on lots of other groups too. Flooding the internet with the same message is a form of SPAM which is 'abuse' as far as e-mail/message boards go.
if you are refering to the post im thinking of, the poster has been banned from ezboard for 'spamming'.
I try not to get into political or religious debates on forums for the same reasons as Al W although i do agree thast a public forum should be just that.
No worries Al, no offence taken by me, just as I say, an interesting observation on tolerance...

Spam it may be, dolomite relevance zero, but worthy of the ready and total condemnation it received or could it have just been ignored?

Good point about the loan leaflets Jod; I always used to shake the mag at the stand so they'd fall out, but now I get supplied from source

to be offended too...as many were including me.

I emailed the guy with good biblically argied reasons as to why his methods are IMHO wrong. I'm quite happy to share those reasons here but I think it would be boring.

Alun Susie and I have (sort of ) earned the right to express our religious views here by virtue of our regular contributions on other subjects too. We've all become friends, well I hope so anyway.

For this guy to parachute in in the way he did was just out of order and I was happy to see the post removed. I dont think it was the Xtianity...it was just his manner that annoyed everyone...
Where I work there seems to be a new kid on the block, something to do with being proscecuted for offending someone on computer's.
I don't pay too much attention to it (perhaps I should!) as I don't use the company computer systems for anything other than signing off job's etc.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge on the subject knows of this law?

So it seems to me Big brother is taking over.

We have ALL earned the right to express our freedom of speech as long as it does not upset someone!
It was a troll. Subject was immaterial although probably chosen to be as provocative as possible. What it was really about was:

a) Some <insert standard Jodderims> wanting to show the world how clever at script programming he is.
b) Gaining amusement by annoying people through wasting their bandwidth, time and money.
c) Seing how many people he can get to bite and so respond, further wasting time, bandwidth and money.

And (s)he's getting what (s)he wanted. The club pays for this forum based on bandwidth used. I've helped massage their lonely little ego by adding to this thread. Please everybody, in future give autotrolls the thorough ignoring they deserve.
Good point. Regardless of whether the person had a right to talk about religion, we do pay for each view of a page. Since that's the case, we should rightly be angry if someone has intentionally posted something off topic in the Dolomite board. There's a place for other discussions, and that's here.

I didn't even click the link. Unfamiliar username, hyperlink that could send you through to a world of pain. There are webpages that will completely screw your computer up, start trying to auto download trojan virus's, spyware etc.
