Lovely car. Fantastic noise and doesn't whiff of Ford too much like the new Jag XK. I buy a Focus I expect it to feel like a Ford, I buy a Jag I don't expect it to be designed by the same bean counters in Detroit. Makes you wonder why anyone would buy a Vanquish?

Only problem with the Aston, besides the price is it's a bit of a footballers car. I often drive through Alderley Edge and Wilmslow (where theres a dealer!) and the streets and Kwik Save car park are littered with Astons and Bentley GTs. There are so many that you don't actually notice them. Drive through there in a 25 year old Sprint and people do stare. Either cos it's different ot they are thinking "Wot not a Bentley"

Test Drive

#4 Post by Mark Larmour » Fri Jun 16, 2006 12:35 pm

Alun,

If you do buy it, and I come to the UK, can I PLEASE have a drive?????????????

I have always wished to own an Aston Martin, and I can assure you that a they a lot cheaper in the UK than Australia my personal choice is probably it would have to be either the Vantage or a Vanquish, decisions, decisions!!!!!!

A few years back I had a drive of a friends 1979 V8 (Oscar Indy) Vantage. Unbelieveable car, but unfortunately the clutch and gearbox reminded me of a truck more than a car.
Nice little car. Only drawback is..... the fact that I'd probably knock myself out each time I got in it. Thats presuming I would actuallty fit in it
Do it.

You are single, have no small people to occupy your time and money, and the business is clearly going well (all credit to you).

You will NEVER regret it.

I had an E type at 21 and a Lotus Esprit at 24. I could afford to run neither, but managed to somehow run each of them for over a year. I still remember them with fondness, and know that if I go under the proverbial bus tomorrow I have ticked the boxes. Ditto the Ferrari Daytona which I had a half share in at 30. I rebuilt the brakes and did a head gasket and water pump on that (gulp!!).

The AMV8 is different. You will be under a comprehensive manufacturers warranty, will be treated like royalty everywhere you go (Astons are just so not flash). Every time you think of it, during or after ownership, a smile will cross your face. You will spend hours just looking at it and grinning with deep inner satisfaction. For once, just for a while you will be complete. You will spend months just peeking under and around it marvelling and different beautifully crafted bits and bobs.

If you don't Jod and I will team up to never let you forget that you had the chance.

In your next contribution, please tell us that you have, and when it arrives. And for goodness sake don't buy the Porsche. Magnificent car that it is, it is not a once in a lifetime car. The Aston is. Full stop.

err...how do you classify Susie then?

Still dwelling; it won't fit in the garage, despite being the 'baby' and would last all of four and a half minutes elsewhere around here.

Had a good tempter of a quote on it today too...but ninety grand? Its 50% more than I paid for my house!

Doesn't buying this mean I can do something less sensible with my car. We had a talk a while back I'm sure....

Stewardship...

#11 Post by Jon Tilson » Sat Jun 17, 2006 9:16 am

Common sense kicks in Alun with that last thought.

While I can empathise with and have a lot of respect for Mr Bellingers comments I think you can achieve a lot of what he is talking about with a lot less dosh...

An Aston is a once in a lifetime car but you would be paying a heck of a lot in depreciation on a new one.

It would annoy the heck out of half your clients too...
For everyone who thinks "Hmmm he's doing well and must be good" there will be five who think "so thats where my inflated fees are going". Sad but true...this is blighty after all..

Just buy an E type roadster or insert your favourite dream classic instead.

Or just do it...what the heck...
If it weren't for the depreciation, I'd say go for it. Don't like the older DB7's but the new DB9 etc are better looking.
Hey, I'm not a Leprechaun!

Also, would just like to add for clarification that whilst I do take up some of Alun's time, I don't take his money. I am not a 'kept' woman!

I think at the end of the day that it is up to Alun what car he drives/buys but must agree with Jonners about how the minds of some people work.

Personally, if I had £90K it wouldn't be going on a car! Then again, I guess Alun wouldn't spend £90K on a cats' rescue centre either.
