Work Related non-sense

#1 Post by 2F45T4U » Fri Aug 18, 2006 12:12 am

Ok ok here goes. I work in a Car speaker factory round here, Panasonic. I've worked there for 16 months and there shutting down In December due to it being cheaper to manufacture in less developed countries. Its one of the factories (if not THE one) considered for the Smart Roadster remanufacture.

The first half of workers are to be made reduntant on the 31st of October, I've worked there long enough to be eligable for redundancy pay, 3.25 X my weekly pay for each year I've worked there. Problem is University begins for me on the 16th of September, bummer, but I've come to accept I won't get any redundancy money.

To get people to stay on until the end there offering loyality bonuses. 4X weekly pay (thats £400 in my case)
Now apparantly if you're still working there by the begining of September you get the bonus, excellent thats me sorted then... but wait... they pay it at the end of September! So I won't be getting it!

£400 is a hell of a lot of money for me in my current situation. I'm finding it hard to get clear answers off senior workers on whether I'm going to get it or not and will be having a meeting with personel soon to talk over all these kind of things, everybody will be having one to one meetings.

What can I say basically? I meet all the criteria to get this money. Your all clever people, thats why I've posted this on a classic car forum
I don't quite get it. If you are working there at the beginning of September you get the loyalty bonus paid to you at the end of September. Why won't you get it? Surely you just wait to the end of September?
So are you saying that you have to work for the whole of September to qualify rather than what you said before (the start of Sep)?
This is where I dont fully understand the situation.

I've heard off various people that if you work up to the begining of September you qualify for the loyalty bonus (as long as you have above a certain % attendance which I do)

But they will be paying this £400 at the end of the month.

I qualify but won't be there.

I don't want my words in the meeting to be "Heres my notice, do I get that £400?"

Simple, if they know you are leaving already you will not be redundant as you will have effectively left already.

If they do not know you are leaving keep ypur mouth shut until the very last date you can hand your notice in and still work the notice you are contracted to do. From then on your fate is in the lap of the Gods...

You go and see the HR Dept and say.."if you're going to keep me I will stay, if not I'm off to university.. your choice?" and see what they say?

Do you have any holiday left? Use it up to extend the time you are employed rather than taking it as a payment in lieu, even if you aren't working. If you get desperate you can self certify yourself off work ill for up to a week without a doctor's certificate, although that is dodgy and I couldn't possibly condone it.

I got 3 holidays left, they have to be taken one at a time (not 3 days off together etc) and to qualify for the loyalty bonus you need to have had no more than 3 days abscent.

I can't miss freshers week, oh no!

so, 3 days holiday, 3 days absent. that's 6 days. How many days do you work a week?

You need to get a written confirmation of the eligiility criteria, then if you qualify, written confirmation that you personally will get the bonus.

Discuss it with HR but be tactful, and dont demand as its only a goodwill jesture anyway - remember as long as they give you the contracted amount of notice (and vice versa) they dont have to give you diddly squat! so get in there and kiss management butt!
