Heel and Toe

#1 Post by davepoth » Sat Aug 19, 2006 10:28 pm

Does anybody bother, in their dolly or otherwise? I've taken to doing it in my Mk4 fiesta because it keeps stalling on the overrun (collapsed catalytic converter apparently, just too tight to replace it) but I very rarely hear anyone else doing it on the road.

Whilst I don't think it's really appropriate for road use (as it usually entails "sprited" driving), I do find myself doing it now and then. Usually when coming down the gears whilst braking or in clutchless/double-declutching manuvers...

I personally find the dolly pedal layout a bit obstructive to do it properly though. Maybe it's just my feet

I'm also a great fan of left foot braking, balancing the car and all that............stems originally from driving autos most the time mind as that's all that seems to exist in our family...Cherokee, LS400, C240 etc etc...

Apologise if it makes no sense or is garbled. Been drinking Becherovka all evening

I don't even bother when I'm racing, pedals are craply laid out. I can do it in my Nissan Patrol though if I'm really bored. As long as you don't bang in second from third so that the revs jump to 5500rpm+, just as you are about to turn into a bend, it shouldn't really be a problem.

but these days I find my road dollies are more stable under brakes than under engine braking, so I tend to fly in to things in , too high a gear or neutral under brakes and then rev it up to catch the appropriate gear just as I need traction again...
last summer..

#7 Post by redrichie » Sun Aug 20, 2006 12:20 pm

When I had the carb problems last summer, I had to use a a smart combination of handbrake, footbrake, throttle and clutch to drive through the traffic in town. Certainly made life interesting.

When I am driving the renault, because it is such a boring car (and the fact that i don't particularly care for it), I often do clutchless gear changes, just to force myself to stay awake and think about it.

I concur, as long as you remember its probably the most dangerous thing we do on a daily basis.

Most people have no clue of the physics involved with driving and show little imagination of what will happen when their vehicle travelling at speed meets something stationary, or worse, coming towards them at a similar speed. Modern cars certainly play their part in making drivers 'feel' safe at high speed but its an illusion. If you crash your Sprint into a wall at 100 MPH you're probably going to die. If you crash your 85-airbag equipped, crumple zoned, super duper Euro NCAP 5 star Renault Magane into a wall at 100 MPH, you're probably going to die. Saftety features do not necessarily make cars safer, good drivers make cars safer.
I see recently there have been calls for a reduction of the speed limit on rural roads, because 60mph is too high. roughly 30% of all road accidents occur on rural roads apparently. Again I think this is due to the number of people who don't know how to drive properly on roads like that, and assuming that the National Speed limit automatically means the road is safe at that speed.

I'm lucky that my driving instructor made me drive down back lanes, sometimes reversing 20-300 yards down a road that's not much wider than the car when there was oncoming traffic, and impressed upon me the risks of rural roads. But I know that sort of "learning to drive" stuff as opposed to "learning to pass the test" is not something everybody gets.

...added to the fact the driver is perhaps less likely to die than passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

I think everyone should have experience, even lessons off the highway involving driving where the limit of control of the car is experienced, tested and correct methods of regaining control are mastered before let lose on the main road.

I also think all cars should be rear drive and a minimum of two litres.
Nanny State

#12 Post by Jon Tilson » Mon Aug 21, 2006 9:47 am

Yet again we see the creeping arm restricting our freedoms.
The entire concept of a blanket speed limit imposed on all roads in all weather conditions on all types of vehicle with all types of driver experience and ability is patently ridiculous.
Even plod knows this, which is why police drivers suitably qualified are exempt from speed limits...

So should we be...
Most of the population treats them as advisory anyway..
So 30% of accidents are caused by excessive speed.

Ergo, 70% of accidents are caused by not driving fast enough

The 60mph limit on some rural roads can be a bit nuts. On the weekend we went for a walk up such a 'lane' down west Wales. It had national speed limit signs at the beginning and there is absolutly no way you could get above 15mph! My car would of (of course I didn't drive up it!) hit the sump after the first 10 foot! Rich suggested I remove it first then have a go It also narrowed to about 6 foot in some parts with trees over growing it that we had to duck down! It even had a mini river crossing half way along!

The combination of playful curiosity and having a nasty incident with a dithering old driver has taught me lots about driving.
I was kind of reassured by watching Jod drive a while back

Exactly...

#15 Post by Jon Tilson » Mon Aug 21, 2006 2:06 pm

So you let the driver decide what the safe speed is for his vehicle and road conditions...Freedom!

Have we so lost confidence in the driving test that we have roads full of idiots that need to be told the speed they drive at?
This is in effect what the 30 and 40 limits actually mean...
Everyone hence drives at 35 and 50 and slows down near gatsos...
Ergo most speed limits are set at least 10 mph to low.
