you think you know someone...

#1 Post by dollyboy » Sat Aug 26, 2006 6:04 pm

In my 33 yrs if I have learned one thing when it comes to people its "trust your instincts".

a little story about a complete fookin tw@t...

A 'mate' of mine of 6 yrs who in fact i lived next door to for a while set up a mobile tyre business after leaving triumph (the motorcycle factory), van complete with compressor, balancer, wheel jig thingy, inverter power, blah blah. he actually did this with his dad originally, but due to some issues he split with his dad and did it by himself after taking his dads contacts etc and so he says, reckons he took his dad to court over some crap. hmmm. raised eyebrows at this, I can appreciate some people dont get on with their parents, but taking action against your dad??!?!?! ok, whatever, I dont have the full story.

anyway, bear in mind i used to 'hang round' with this guy for want of a better phrase, clubbin, pubs, bars etc, came on my stag do, wedding, more recently regular trips to pub for drinkies and pool etc, which to be honest since i moved to derby have sort of fizzled out a bit. last week got in touch with him, asked him for a favor, could he take 4 tyres off some dolly wheels I have, he agreed, met him down the pub, beer, pool etc. txtd him yesterday asking him if he'd done them n if he fancied pub again, the response was "wheels are done, they're behind the car in front of my garage, come n pick em up when you like n post £15 through the door, tyres cost £1 each to get rid of"

my response was " r u windin me up? £11 labour for 10 mins work, nice work if you can get it, kwik fit would have probably done it for FA"

him "take them to kwik fit then, tight wad, only come down the pub when you want something, blah blah"

me [small essay about principals of being m8s, he never comes to derby etc etc, fcukin tw@t, blah blah, better not be there when i pick wheels up]

fetched wheels, he had actually put tyres back on, minus valves, n stuck a knife through the 2 good tyres! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

solution - national tyres just whipped them off for me earlier today, and applying eye 4 eye principal, EDIT - I thought of a few retribution projects, eg waiting outside his house for him and beating the crap out of him, but I have planned my counter airstrike (i did put it on here but thought better of it).

I HATE feeling compelled to seek revenge/justice in this way but what else can i do? is it right that he gets away with it scott free?? me thinks not. too small fry and insignificant for rogue traders/watchdog and the likes of, our neighbourhood five 0 friends who are never there when you need them will just laugh this off with something like "choose better mates", so what else can I do??

fcukin tosser.

ps, wont mention that his name is adam leatherland, A L mobile tyres, hinckley, coz that would be slanderous, but please dont ever use this @rsehole for any work whatsoever....

As a self employed bloke who is often expected to do things at 'mate's rates' I can half sympathise with him Kev. His time is money and it isn't necessarily 9-5 time any more. Even if he has no other paid work to do at the time this is now his livlihood...

I have done work for friends but always charge them something. (the something depending on our closeness and history, but always less than the market rate)

All the places around here would charge me between 5-10 to take off a tyre and dispose of it so 15 for 4 is a good rate in my opinion.

However if he had inferred he'd do it for nowt then I understand your grief.

If he took his old boy to court then he has sold his birthright and will be eternally damned...punishment enough perhaps?

Put the 15 through his door anyway would be my advice.

I know its hard, but if i was you just walk away and be the bigger man........if he can take his old man to court then chances are he'll get you for anything he can if you lay a finger on him!! just think that he wanted £15 from you for taking the tyres off, so now he's out of pocket further as he put them back on again!!
Sounds like a very childish chap who I would stay away from!! But i do feel for you as he was a mate who you thought you could ask a favour from!!
If I ever do a mate a favour I just asked them to supply the bits (as its usally bodywork) or in your case where nothing needs buying then I call it 4 cans of the good stuff!!

if I was you just bite your lip and stay away from him as it will prob be you that will come off worst!!

cheer up its the TDCIR in a few weeks take care!!

i do see that angle as well and having an appreciation for how tough things can be out there at the minute I understand exactly what you mean, but pay him £15 for the pleasure of doing twice the work i asked for, not getting what i asked for and trashing 2 good tyres? give me a break.

this is also the same guy who a while back tried to cream an extra £20 out of me when I was looking at 2nd hand bmw halo lights for alg1k, from a guy I know who would have sold them direct to me anyway. his whole existance is centred around £ and that aside, he's vindictively knackered 2 firestone tyres with about 4-5 mm on them and put the tyres back on out of spite.

this is a guy ive spent plenty of hours making cds for from records ive bought on equipment ive bought and he's paid me jack for that, where each one of the 3 or 4 i did took me enough time to take off 40 tyres each if we're looking at it in terms of time.

this is a guy i've got into clubs free because i 'know people'.

this is a guy I have pointed many a punter to in the spirit of helping him develop his business and get his name about.

this is the same guy who I paid to trailer back project 'vulture', and then tried to charge me for the turbo on his van that subsequently blew a few days later after he drove back over 100miles at a steady 80+mph with me constantly telling him to slow down.

obviously im currently quite wounded by what he's done, but lets be realistic alun, this guy has NO concept of "doing a favor for a 'mate'" and has put me in a position where im gona have to fork out say £70-£80 to replace the tyres he's deliberately ruined. he could have told me he wanted money for the job in the 1st place, at least i'dv been able to consider it, and would have been happy to sort him out by way of a couple of drinks regardless, because he's helped me out. Instead now he's sat there feeling smug, thinking he's got one over on me.

If it was the other way round i'm the sort of bloke that would have actually gone out of my way to help him and gladly done it for zip, because to me thats what mates do.

everyone i've spoken to about it so far reckon he's a cock and there was absolutely no need for him to do what he did, and the way I feel about him at the minute I truly couldnt give a toss if he went bust after being gang raped by pakis and terrorists flew a plane into his house.

I'll look at it more objectively in a few days when im less gutted, no doubt about that, and the fact i've packed up smoking this week isnt helping, but come on, put yourself in my shoes, how would you feel if someone you thought was a mate did something like that to you? maybe i saw him as more of a mate than he obviously saw me, which makes it worse, coz if thats the case as far as im concerned he's been freeloading off me for years and has the balls to call me tight!

fcuk that, he deserves a royal kicking.

ps thanks nathan, in reality, even though you dont know me, thats probably exactly what i'll end up doing... mainly because theres far bigger and more important things in my life than putting myself out to deal with idiots

You will always come across folk like this. There are people like us and there are people like him, always have been, always will be.

Several motives for my recommendation; from your point of view, its only 15 quid and less than you'd have to have paid anyway. From his its the reason for his possible grievance to you; no doubt he is venting to his 'mates' about it as much as you are to us. Pay him, and he simply has no argument left.

Secondly, as time passes and he realises that you now consider him to be a "see you next..." he will perhaps have time to reflect on the value of that 15 quid and what it has cost him? No more beers/pool/male bonding etc etc
sympathy kev. you've got to feel sorry for 'mates' like that.
I'm a big believer in what goes around comes around, if a mate or a good mate of a mate calls i will go out to help them be it to rescue there car from a ditch or just help jump start them.
in return i find that people do me favours like the guy who spent 6 days welding the fwd. i only know him cos his wife used to work with mrs 1300dolly. his charge for the welding was some beer and i offered to wire an alarm to his daughters fiesta, all of 3-4 hours work.
i took 2 fwd wheels to a local tyre shop to have the tyres swapped over, no charge cos he knows i will put work his way if i can. he even fitted valves and balanced them.
cheers folks.

doing patches for the smoking, always been a bit sceptical about how well they actually work, I bought a pile of them off a guy I know at a boat show at the start of the yr, they really do work. these have been sat in my desk drawer at work since january, and i ran out of fags, didnt have any cash to get any and thought stuff it, we'll have a go. that was last tues. if im honest i've had the odd one or two, but the routine/habit seems pretty well cracked, just hope i can keep it up. quite timely for dollybaby's arrival...

the matter in hand - while I see aluns point (well, possibly, if its paying him the money just to prove how insignificant £15 is and that im by far the bigger guy), i think pmn hit the nail on the head. pay him £15 to be 2 tyres worse off than when i started?? i could write him a chq, wipe my @rse on it n post it to him, but i cant be bothered to go to the trouble. im just biding my time, justice will prevail one way or another, an excuse to exercise the long term dormant 'evil kev' i reckon.

quite honestly i dont think the guy actually has any real friends and i'm not surprised. im calmer now, and the world is a slightly brighter place again.

snook out to see stealth, re-installed tunnel carpet and a door card. may have her ready for TDCIR... fingers x'd!

Patches

#11 Post by KWM338R » Mon Aug 28, 2006 6:52 pm

I did the patches thing in january dollyboy, they were by far the best method I tried, you really have towant to stop smoking though for them to work. I recently lapsed, but have bought another box to help me again. Good luck.
al - its very rare that evil kev is awakened, i've got enough self control to see the bigger picture fortunately.

phil, i dont see how its stupid, named and shamed, just in case anyone in the hinckley/nuneaton area is ever tempted to use this jerk off, this is surely enough press to make them think twice.

he cant complain, i havent got any commission from all the business ive pointed his way, and thats how he repays me... i wouldnt dream of 'asking' for anything in return for a bit of support n good will, but this whole saga has changed my take on the mates rates and favors scheme.

anyway, getting fed up with this now, my grief has been vented.
