Right, rot spots to check, in increasing difficulty to fix:
Lower front corners of wings inc where they join the front panel.
Front floorpans.
Bulkhead (remove footwell carpets).
Around the rear wheel arch and bottom of rear wings.
Roof above rear screen.
Windscreen pillars.
Front panel.
Chassis rails either side of gearbox.
Chassis rails under the bonnet (remove battery if poss, check subframe mounts from below)
Bottom of gutter under bonnet ahead of screen.

The engines on these are so cheap as to be practically a disposable item so I wouldn't worry about the smoke. The OD gearbox is a very desirable item but the total bill for changing the 1st gear will be a lot higher than the cost of the cog. Parts availability for these is 100%. There are no panels being reproduced but NOS ones come up. The club is producing patch panels that cover almost all the grot spots.

My gut feeling is that it sounds honestly advertised. That said thoroughly inspect the doumentation, 140k is possible on these engines. Jon can point you in the direction of a guy not a million miles from you who can do dolly bodywork in his sleep.
If you are prepared to put some money into this car beyond it's purchase price you can easily have a car that will go on and on and on for years, they're just unburstable. An excellent choice for your first classic. It will probably go for over £150 because the spitfire boys will bid it that far just for the box.

Insurance will be peanuts, talk to Footman James and Heritage to start you off.
