phoenixphil100

#1 Post by David6214 » Sun Aug 06, 2006 10:13 am

There was a suggestion a while ago that we get together a list of ebay ids so we know when we are bidding against each other....not sure if anything came of this....but I think its a good idea. I use the same ID for both. While I am on the subject are any of you phoenixphil100?

Good idea unless you are a seller in which case the days of low starting prices are over. Remember what an auction is all about here chaps, true market force dictates the sale price. Start a buyers cartell and you will just not see things you want/need listed

sorry Alun got to disagree with you. i think knowing whos who will stop some people, me included bidding on things that we don't need just because it may come in handy one day when someone may acually need that part to put their car back on the road. as was proved with the service kit that the club wanted for loan purposes, 3 club members pushing the prices high when it could have been got for a tenth of the price and everyone would have benefited.
rant over.
...apart from the seller that is, who if in the belief it would have only realised 10% of its value wouldn't have bothered listing it in the first place and possibly consigned it to the bin. Personally, as a former seller I no longer bother listing due to the apparent lack of interest in the items I will likely never use myself. Who's loss is that?

All fine except I often bid on cars that are local and cheap just to stop someone breaking them up or scrapping them. I may well end up bidding against you guys and if you wanted the car or a part I'd rather you had it......and didn't have me inflating the price. but as Alun says....its a tricky call. Forget I ever mentioned it!

(but if you see me bidding on something you desperately want, let me know, I'll probably back out, or at least confirm whether I really want it). There are a few surprise ebay wins lurking around here!

The reason I will rarely hold my bids because someone purports to badly want or need a specific item is because I will always ask mys self 'Do they, do they really?' or is it just because it appears to be cheap?

A few years back a local club member was down on his luck and 'between jobs; owned a 1300 which was his daily and only drive. Had a rotten front wing which had just been repiared too often and desperately wanted a new one. The rest of the car was sound and his pleadings convinced me to sell him a new wing I had 'by me'. They were at the time still available from certain retailers at £290 plus VAT. I let him have it for what it had cost me.

A few weeks later I bumped into him in town and he proudly told me he had secured a new job, ( the first in several years) and he was now the custodian of a brand new Rover 400. Gives you good time to work on the dolly I said; nah, crushed it was the reply...and the wing I enquired? it was in the boot!

Saying that, I wholeheartedly support a known 'Club identity' which might bid on parts for the benefit ofus all - for instance, I won't bid against 'mattnbeck' as that is Malcolm bidding on parts for the Club held spares, ball joints etc, of which I already have enough anyway...

you and I often bid against each other to "mark our territory" and then neither of us buy when the price goes sensible...or we bid on stuff too far away and take ages to collect it, which is my favourite stupid trick. Must learn to read the listings.
I reckon a few bid against me on principle cos I have too many...
I bid on stuff with opening bids sometimes as a way of watching it as my watch list is full of stuff I like to refer back to...but I'd never let on whether I'm merely watching or bidding with intent.

I might not bid on anything for a month so I can change my identity without anyone knowing; I used to enjoy it when folk didn't know who I was

In the case of things like the FWD service kit, it would probably be a good idea for people to post on here that they are bidding for it, as there really isn't too much point in several people trying to buy the same thig for the same reason. But I would agree that it's a bit against the idea of eBay to agree not to bid on an item.

I'd suggest that if someone on the board wins an item that you wanted, contact them and attempt to do a deal post auction.
I am with Dave on this. If I want something really badly (as was the case for steering rack gaiters a few months ago)
I'll post something on here.

But to be truthful, Iv'e got most bits a need and loads I don't!

I can't justify listing Dolly parts on ebay as they just don't sell or in the case of 1 item, was sold and not paid for earning ME a negative!!!

I'm not sure if the guy was a club member or not. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">
Engine? On eBay...where???

OK, so I don't need one/want to bid on one, but this highlights that at the same time as asking folk not to bid on something, others are providing links to the auctions (obviously for the benefit of those of us that have access to the discussion board but not to ebay?!?) and advertising the fact parts that some folk desperately want are available.

With the odd exception things rarely sell on ebay for more than they can be sought elsewhere. You could ask everyone on here not to bid and we don't and then some TR7 owner nabs it for £1.02 pence with bid napper at the last minute. Then everyone loses.

Bid what you are prepared to pay in the structure you have decided for yourself as being an efficient way to win. If you get a bargain then well done, if you don't, so be it. If you win it and its not a bargain then you only have yourself to blame for having bid so high.

Afterall, what is so wrong with paying the going rate for something you need?
