coil

can anyone tell me how many wires should be connected to the coil .i have 3 ,2 plus' and 1 minus.<br>
to turn the engine i have to turn the ignition key to on,ie lights appear on the dash,and then i have a wire which is attached to the starter motor ,which i have to touch the live on the battery ,this makes the engine turn over.i know this is incorrect but have no idea but have no idea where it should go .i have a 1973 sprint.
