Ignition problems?

#1 Post by Mike L Taylor » Fri Aug 26, 2005 9:05 pm

In just this last month of actually being able to use this forum, there has been an absolute wealth of info and help flashing around. Thanks to all you dedicated guys (I saw one reply from someone at about 2.30 am for one topic !! Bloody heck!!)
Anyway, I wonder if anyone would have some info on my other snag (I know I still have my spooky brakes to deal with).

When driving my Sprint hard uphill (particularly one very long steep hill on the A38 called Haldon Hill just after the M5 merges onto the A3<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)"> I get a very weird spitting or erratic ticking sound - just like the noise as if you were to spit onto the plate of a hot iron. There is also a bit of a pinking sound but the spitting sound appears to be at the same time. Naturally the temp gauge rises due to the increase in effort by the engine and eventually drops back on the way down the other side. Up until climbing the hill the temp gauge registers just above half with no undue ignition noise - in fact the car runs like a dream. Starting is usually first time and acceleration is still pretty hot. I have had the ignition timing and dwell angle checked and the results seem to be ok. The first thing I thought I'd do is change the points - and maybe the plugs but should I also be looking at the coil or condenser or what. I am running normal unleaded (lower grade) and occasionally put a capful of Superblend Zero Lead 800 lead substitute in my tank when I fill up for any long runs which I bought from Winneke who races the BCCP Team Ost Sprints in Holland. Not sure if this problem is likely to worsen as time goes by but don't want to take the head off just to check. Anyone had a similar situation?
SuperBlend Zero Lead 2000
SuperBlend Zero Lead 2000, the No.1 lead substitute, has been formulated to enable vehicles originally designed for leaded petrol to run safely on unleaded fuel. It is available either by mail order, or through stockists that will be announced soon.
A standard 500-ml pack contains enough additive to treat 150 litres (over 30 gallons)
I think it is your petrol and not enough additive that is causing the problem. Older performance engines are really sensitive to modern fuels - and the quality can vary from one filling station to another. Keep to the same additive, always the correct amount - and if possible the same fuel. My old Merc 280E runs best of all on Tesco's (surpisingly!) super unleaded 99 Octane - my two local villages garages with some "no name brands" do the engine no good at all - pinking even on their super grade petrols. When I put Tesco or BP super (higher octane) in - no problems

My Dolomite 1500HL (collecting it tomorrow - hurray!!!) will, as does the Wolseley already, only get 4star unleaded - there is a garge six miles from me that still sells it
Yea, I always use Super octane (98+) i.e. Shell Optimax and a millers VSP additive, giving ~100+ octane, runs great.

Topped up with a tank of 4* last week though, excruciatngly expensive though <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Mind you, the garage did come out and pump it for you! Ain't seen that for a while!

Supermarkets buy their fuel from the lowest bidding supplier; you could get BP one week and Texaco the next

When I "worked" in Tividale I could see the Gulf oil terminal in Oldbury from my offce window. Texaco, Tesco, BP, Shell, Q8, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Gulf, Esso et al all used to go there to fill their tankers. Maybe they had a guy with a bucket of additives pouring-in the goodies when they filled the tankers or maybe, just maybe, its all the bloody same.
When is the same not the same, when it is a different "Brand". Thus when we apply the "Brand" we change the perception of the product as the "Brand Values" carry from the Brand to the product and thus create a perceived difference. As perception is our version of reality thus we conclude the product is different somehow even when it is not (as Jod demonstrates). I remember the days when the Supermarkets started selling Petrol, "Pahh, it'll never catch on said some". Now most of the volume goes through them.

Anyway, Mike, Points Gap/Dwell Correct, Ignition Timing Correct, Mixture Correct then it could be a Carbon Buildup causing some 'hot spots'. I run XAA on Std Unleaded with Superblend and std settings and all is well. The 'Head' is clean though, well was clean when it went back on 5000 Miles ago
Additives can be added at the pump/nozzle...like the stripes in toothpaste. Without thestripes Signal is just plain old SR.

Don't know why everyone raves about Optimax though; remember Formula Shell? I haven't given Shell any money since. The short memory of the consumer...if Rimmers had sold Formula Shell then everyone would remember!
Supermarket petrol is good for one thing...its closed loads of Town Centre filling stations that my Clients keep asking me to do feasibility studies on<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Same with all these Chinese garmets choking up European warehouses as the quotas have been exceeded. Those with an ear to the ground will notice that a wide range of retailers from M&S to Primark are complaining about these garments not being allowed in. Surely a £5.99 jumper in Primark is not the same as the £24.99 one you buy in M&S? You bet your danglies it is.

I had a telephone market research call a few weeks ago. Normally I would say [no thanks] but when the girl mentioned petrol companies I thought it would be interesting to see what she had to say. The questions were all about "brand perception" and were about premium fuels from Esso, Texaco, Shell and BP. One of the questions was "which of the four companies do you perceive as trustworthy" Firstly, she didnt have a tick-box option for "none of them" and said she couldnt note my comments about "cartel", "artificial price fixing" and "political leverage".

In 1981 a film was made that opened with these lines: "I remember a time when the world was powered by the black fuel and the deserts sprouted great cities of pipe and steel. Gone now, swept away for reasons long forgotten, two great warrior tribes went to war and touched-off a blaze that engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw. The thundering machine sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked, but nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled, cities exploded, a whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear. On the roads it was a white-line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice"

Take the current Iraq situation and add 30 years. Melodramatic maybe, but it makes you think...
Of course, I'm a sad mupet with nothing better to do than watch the same film over and over and over and over again until I know it all off by heart. And dont get me started on Star Wars. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

but is that how Mad Max 1 starts? Ive never manamged to see the whole thing as whenever its on wife and kids
seem to have the monopoly on TV and conversation.
My kind of film though...and I actually saw the begining of the Charles Bronson Mr Majestic thing the other night.... then wife said I had to come to bed or sleep downstairs on the sopha. As daughter had a sleepover of friends that wasnt an option...Can you imagine half a dozen 13 years olds seeing daddie in his undies...Never live it down with their mums I know....still major digression over....
Optimax is the only thing I know makes a difference and Sinsburies super unleaded is a litlle more nock resistant in the V8 rover but not enough to justify the premium.
You need a decoke...and some new plugs will help. Bosch platinums are far and away the best if you can find them. Optimax must be done with an additive though but I dont remember seeing a shell tanker come out of the BP terminal at hemel hempstead ever when I worked round the corner. Still that was 10 years ago...
I like shell...nice girl at our local. one and it seems to be 1p chepaer than the rest.
Godd holiday in Italy and good to see you all again.
