SU Jets

#1 Post by speedracer » Mon Sep 26, 2005 12:56 pm

Had to replace a leaky SU jet this evening due to poor fitting by myself (didn't know how to remove float bowl resulting in a kinked jet tube)

Anywho - can someone explain to me what holds the jet tube into the base of the float bowl?

I see that there is a brass screw-in bit, a rubber bit and a washer, but all of these bits just slide over the jet tube. So i could in theory screw everything into the float bowl then have the tube pull out as nothing much is holding it in...
There is a 7/16 bolt that goes through the carb body and holds the float bowl on. The setup you describe is correct the jet tube goes through the union and washer, the little rubber grommet is what holds the tube tight, as you tighten the union it compresses the grommet and holds it all in, it seems the rubber grommet only has one chance as I have never sucessfully got one to seal after the union has been undone.

The little rubber ring acts like an olive when compressed, preventing the pipe coming out. The usually seal okay when new. Ive had a few successful repeats but only with new rubbers.
The jet itself is held up by the choke linkage...
