guy I bought me motor off said you could use HS6 needles in them? I didn't believe it off hand (took it as pub talk) but was there any truth in it?

I had HS8s on my TR7 Sprint and used HS6 needles after changing to the 0.90 size jets. I used the uprated Sprint HS6 needles (BDQ?) and the car ran great.
I have the old TriumphTune performance manual at home and I should be able to look up what needles are used in the HS8 with 100 size jets. I think it is either UE or UM.
When I bought a new set of HS8s they were fitted with 125 jets & UE needles (standard cam). I got these from the carb exchange in Bedfordshire who said that that is what others were using as a starting point.

In the TriumphTune Performance manual from the mid 1970s, it says that Dolly Sprints with HS8 carbs and K&N air filters should have UE needles. Cars with road cams should have UM needles. And finally those cars with wild cams should have UV needles.
