Lead Replacement and MPG

#1 Post by oneshortplanck » Mon Sep 04, 2006 9:36 pm

Hi all,

I have a 1500TC and drive 30 miles to work at 39-40 MPG (40 mins at 50 mph all the way) is this typical milage?

and also i have noticed redex have introduced a 2 tank bottle selling at at £5 a bottle.
im sure the last time i bought some it was £5 for a 4 tank bottle!
Is it me or have they slyly put the price up?

That's pretty good mileage for any 1.5 engine, let alone a 30+ year old one.

I get 35 mpg in my 1850. But thats on motorway only miles. So you must be doing pretty good.
My 1500 is pretty good on the go go, however I've never been bothered to calculate it though.

I guess I have too much time on my hands. But I was intrested in getting an accurate idea of fuel economy to use as an indicator on engine performace. As my 1850 is my daily runner, I wanted to burn as little fuel as I could.

When I got my 1850 I was only getting around 23 MPG. After some improvements to ignition, timing, carbs etc I now manage the 35mpg I mentioned earlier in the thread.

I plan to uprate the induction and exhaust next year in an effort to improve performance. I will check the fuel economy again when the work is complete (1850 sport exhaust and some sort of freeer air intake.

Any guesses as to what I can expect as far as changes in fuel economy?

Thanks

Economy won't go up that much. the exhaust should give you a bit more poke, which will help, but if you have a freeer air intake you need richer needles, which will burn more fuel so that gives only a small improvement.

I used...

to have totally standard induction on my Spit 1500...like it came from Canley.
As these all do, the exhaust flange finally gave up the ghost stud wise so I went for the Triumph tune 4-2-1 setup and straight through twin silencers. Needed new needles too. (richer). Sounds great and goes like a bomb.
It used to do 280 miles on a tank...bang on 40 mpg.
I havent got more than 230 since the mods.

So the Jonners principal is this...

If it goes faster and makes more noise it will do less mpg...
