sprint carb mounts
sprint carb mounts
Hey all, i need your wisdom. My sprint, 2" su carbs rubber mounts to manifold, knackered! Rear carb now hanging somewhat loose, hence the non starting. Are the mounts a standard, or do i need mounts for 2" carbs? I remember reading on here sometime ago, a debate about rubber versus alloy mounts. What do you guys suggest?

Re: sprint carb mounts
I like the alloy ones, that said mine need new sealing rings, I'll have to see if they are obtainable - anyone know....
No brainer!
Alloy are the only way to go; Club can supply, 2" or 1.75"

Re: sprint carb mounts
Club only has 1.75's in stock, not sure wot would be invlolved in opening them out to 2.00
No problem going out to 2" I trust the stud spacing is the same on both carb's.

Let me know how many are needed and I'll get the ball rolling.
Re: 2 for me please
My first week as a Dolomite owner (last Feb) ended with the purchase of some very expesive rubber carb mounts from those folks in Lincolnshire. If only I knew better.

I'm sure the alloy ones are much more durable, but I do notice that the rubber ones provide a degree of shock absorbtion, particulary on cold starts when my Dolomite runs a bit lumpy.

Is this shock absorbtion of any benefit to the functioning of the carbs? Do the alloy ones provide the same benefit?
Re: sprint carb mounts
Stud spacing appears to be the same on HS6 and HS8 at approx 54mm.
Were the Club to have 2" available then I'd have a pair too...maybe two pair eventually

I believe I now have a contact who can reamer out manifolds to 2" too...

As with most things...
the makers were probably right. Now I know BL product engineering wasnt the best but in my 30 odd years of Triumph ownership I can count the after market "improvements" in very small numbers.
For me the jury is out on alloy carb mounts. Its even out on leaking perished looking rubbers needing changed.
I've fitted quite a few "new" ones to 1850's to replace perished and manky looking ones that, having removed them, I could clearly see were NOT leaking air. The new ones do however cos the flanges arent flat and the sealing rings dont protrude enough to seal. Result is car runs like a camel, if at all..

So if you do buy the lincolnshire pork sausage variety then expect them to need thick gaskets and lots of silicone sealant to work, then expect them to look as manky and perished in 6 months time when you wish you hadnt thrown the old ones away.

Before carb mounts its always breather hoses.

Alloy mounts....hmmm so what do you do about insulating from the nice water heated inlet manifold that will boil your fuel away and stop you restarting until you've cooled down or knacker your pump and battery churning away to get enough go juice up again to start.

So thats the reason for the rubber mounts...I dont really buy the shock absorber bit, well not on Sprints anyway.
I suppose most alloy mount users just dont do lots of short trips on hot days...

wise words Jonners..
...as ever..
I actually find my car is easier to start in the morning if left outside overnight than if I've parked it in my garage.

Obviously when put in the garage still warm, it takes longer to cool down and therefore more fuel can vapourise off.

Of course, moving to a new house without a garage will remove my problem...
