radiator reconditioning ?

has anyone had this done ? <br>

what is changed? just the core or the whole lot looked at? <br>

im thinking of having a recore done on my rad before the summer ....its in a pretty nasty state how much am i looking at? <br>

When I was mechanic we used to get rads reconditioned all the time as it was quite a bit cheaper than buying brand new mazda ones, every bit as good as a new one but as I say, cheaper. They basically remove the tanks from the rad and put in a new core, after that they then flow test it and make sure it`s water tight and give it a nice new coat of paint. Personally i`ve never experienced a problem with a recon rad and have used them in a number of my own vehicles.

I enquired at a local rad place near me to recore a Sprint rad, quoted me £72. <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :eek --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> I choked politely and hung up. I'm sure it's cheaper than that elsewhere...

i've had this done on two of my sprints and the cost was around £85 each time so £72 is good.

Do they replace the outer "frame" as well as mine is rotted through at the bottom where the fan has thrown road water onto it.

not normally they just replace the core, but you don't get the fame if you exchange one at triumph suppliers. if it's only the bottom steel plate any metal frabricator can easily knock you up a replacement.<br>

Watch that the recore is for a Sprint and not an 1850, I was caught with this many years ago.<br>

I would have said that £72 was reasonable. Especially if you get them to braze a boss into the tank for a leccy fan switch while they're at it...<br>

I had mine recored and modified so that it had the thermosat for my kenlowe in the offside vertical panel. I think it was bout 85 notes<br>

£72 is not bad. But as the chaps say, make sure the correct 3 row 16ish gill per inch core is used. A lot of rad builders use a 2 row core from an 1850 cos the tanks are the same. This is a definate no no in my book. It sepends on where the core is sourced from as to how much of the old rad is used. a decent core has the 'end plates and frame' already brazed to the tubes, neccessitating just the tanks to be soldered on. in this instance, the lower frame is new, all that is re-used are the tanks and the mounting brackets.

Well I guess we live and learn - I've never had a rad re-cored before so was guessing £72 was a lot, but not if it's like new (or better if modified) of course. Thanks for the feedback. Will give him a ring if overheating not solved.

The viscous fan on my track Sprint decided to release itself from the pulley wheel on Friday with predictable results. The rad on the right is obviously a Sprint rad but what is the rad on the left. I had this as a spare in my garage loft & when I went to get it down today noticed the difference in the core design.<br>

Hard to be precise going by only photo's, but looks like your spare rad is an 1850. These are physically the same size, but have fewer gills per inch. If it is a 3row core then chances are it is a Sprint rad that has been recored at some time with a 'less dense' core.<br>
