1850 cooling question

#1 Post by dollysteve » Tue May 31, 2005 8:46 am

I have now fitted my kenlowe fan and Revotec fan controller and it all seems to be working well enough. I have one issue though. I have set the controller to come on between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way up the guage as my nerves just couldn`t handle seeing the guage constantly at 3/4 as the instructions suggest. It seems that once the temperature has been reached the fan stays on constantly even whilst driving at 70 mph it will cut out eventually but only when idling, I am thinking that maybe there is a build up of silt in the system and this is hindering flow, it doesn`t appear to lose any water and certainly doesn`t lack power. I am considering flushing the system and and maybe removing the t/stat altogether just for the summer months and my drive to lemans do you think. The radiator in the car looks to be fairly recent so I am ruling this out, also I did notice the guage creep up close to 3/4 when I got to about 90mph.

Kenlowe

I flushed my 1300 when I got it as a precaution ( it wasn't overheating) and a massive amount of silt came out - it's well worth doing. I have a question about the Kenlowe - my Sprint is fitted with one and the sensor is rather crudely stuck inside the top hose, is this how the instructions recommend it is fitted? I thought that it might be hindering the flow of coolant.
By the sounds of it your fan t/stat is fitted correctley but as you say it is rather crude, personally I think they are a bit naff which is why I got rid of it in favour of the Revotec fan controller, it fit`s in the top hose but as it is basically a tube with a sensor it does not hinder water flow at all unlike the Kenlowe capillary one and it looks so much tidier, trouble is it does cost about £50 with delivery. I got mine from Europa Car Spares, it also comes with a relay which is a sensible addition to even a standard Kenlowe setup.

Never run an engine . . .

without thermostat as the coolant might not be evenly distributed in the cylinder block or the cylinder head, there might be hot spot where there is no or almost no coolant movement, so you might end up with the front cylinder of the engine cool and the rear almost boiling . . .
