sprint cooling

Has anyone got an uprated radiator on their sprint? I seem to remember some of you guys saying a volvo 740 rad will fit. I assume its a larger one than the sprints, but fits perfectly. What about the hoses, the sprint upper small one? Do you use the volvo ones and blank off the smaller sprint one?

The volvo one isn't a straight fit. Definitely a no go if you have the viscous fan. Also involves trimming valance and spoiler. I've looked at the Ford Transt rad and I reckon that would be a better fit. I'll be attempting that shortly so will let you know.
Look on abay and get some dimensions.
"Fits perfectly" is a slight misconception. It does need a bit of fettling. It's about the same width but about 100mm. higher than the Sprint's.
I am in the middle of "doing the mod" so will have more pics soon (too hot the last couple of evenings). Scott has done it so he may put some pics up as well.

As far as I can tell, the large top hose (left) should fit ok, but the small top hose is about 4" lower down the side of the Volvo rad & bottom hose will need some attention as that is also about 4" lower. I'll let you know how it goes. Watch the "Worn Ring" thread.

do you have a problem with cooling? a well maintained cooling system and a healthy engine should keep cool even in this weather.

I'd try flushing the radiator and engine block to get the waterways back to full efficiency. park the car up somewhere where you don't mind making a mess on the tarmac, set the heater to hot and leave the engine to cool. when it's cool disconnect the hoses from the radiator (do it at the radiator end) and then shove a hosepipe into the top hole. Leave it there until the water comes out clear. then put the hose into the water pipe which leads to the engine and repeat until that comes out clear.

At this point I took the expansion tank off and emptied that too, it was a bit gunky.

Then reconnect the whole thing, and open the thermostat housing. Pour in 25% antifreeze mixed with de-ionized battery water from the motor factor (it's distilled so no limescale) and put the cover back on. Run for a bit to get the air to the top and refill.

This completely solved my cooling issues with my sprint, the guage would only just creep above half, even in weather like today.

I know its different uses but last year with my old uprated rad, temps hit 110. This year, similiar ambient temps, driven for longer because engine didn't break(!) max temp I have seen with the volvo rad is 85. My system is obviously as clean as you can get so I'd say it is worthwhile but not with the amount of fettling the volvo rad needs. Mart's is different as its a track car.

No, I agree. Could just imagine me taking the grinder to my Brooklands Sprint...............not.
There must be a more efficient rad out there that will fit without to many probs. so I'll be interested to see how you get on with the tranny rad.
