Hissing sound when depressing the brake pedal

#1 Post by AndyS » Sun May 29, 2005 11:19 am

Hi guys, haven't been around for a while (basically because the car has been running great) but now I'm getting the above sympton. Any ideas? could it be the brake servo?
thanks in advance.
Check the servo pipe, but its probably the seal on the inside of the servo, where the foot pedal depresses it, I think you can just buy that seal, it should be ok then.

No need to dismantle all the brakes, you should be able to undo the master and pull it out of the way, then undo the servo from the inside and remove and inspect and replace the seal.

Hi - does the club stock a servo seal kit? If it is available how easy is it to fit?
Thanks

Club doesn't stock Servo Seal Kits, Servo rebuilds are not really a DIY proposition due to the construction method (crimped outer casing ring). However, we do stock fully remanufactured units for the Sprint on an exchange basis, details in the club mag <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Any risk?

#5 Post by samgamgee911 » Tue May 31, 2005 10:40 am

Hi - thanks for the reply. I have read a few old threads on this and it would appear to be a common problem. What are the implications of the hissing - for example decreased braking ability or the chance over thime that there will be a safety implication?

Also - Daily Sprinter mentioned as seal which I assume is external to the sealed casing - any ideas where to get one?

Thanks again

risk

Yes there is a risk, your brakes will have very little servo effort, probably fine to start with when you first touch the brake pedal, and as it hisses you loose vacuum pressure in the servo, hence less servo effort.
I'm sure it will only get worse over time, you could always try a scrap yard for one, personally I've never had one leak.

You will need a very strong right foot, plus it is an MOT failure.

Sorry, no idea where to get a seal though
