subframe coating

#1 Post by dollyboy » Thu Jan 05, 2006 10:51 pm

does anyone know what a standard subframe is coated with? is it just paint or powder coated? while one would hope its powder coated i somehow expect its just painted with some kind of enamel type stuff

reason: subframe on orange is in reasonably good nick, original coating is generally in tact, and being a tight arse (<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> ) im watching my orange budget, and was toying with simply giving it a lick of something (hammerite <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> ) over the top of whats already on it rather than going to the expense of powder coating when it may not actually need it.

I guess this could stand me in the zone of being a hypocrite after my earlier rantings on the benefits of powder coating, and while i understand the benefits etc etc, im now debating in my case whether its actually worth it. I also expect the answer SHOULD be, "yes of course its worth it, while its all in bits" etc, it may mean that the car wont actually be ready until june/july rather than may as I originally hoped...
Playing devils advocate here. I powdercoated mine, but the car's for occasional dry summer use only. The drawback with powdercoating is that under normal daily use, it will, through time, get chipped and allow moisture in behind the coating etc.

With paint, you can generally just touch in any chips etc. If it was mine, for daily use, i'd go for paint, then waxoyl it.

Personaly i would for looks and rust resistance, first take it back to clean metal, then paint it with por15 (avalible from frost restorations) then uses some stonechip (similar to shutz but you can paint over it) then paint it orange <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> . that gives it exelent rust resistance it you then waxoil the cavitys, dont be stingy with the waxoil though. hope that gives some ideas.
