Rusty screen pillars
Re: exactly what
Water finds it's way down the pillar.

This is probably due to a dodgy screen seal or rust eating through behind the rear part of the front wing where water can trap.

Get a waxoyl pipe in at the top and let it run all the way down until it comes out at the bottom. This will also help the top of the sill where the A post sits . If water ingress is bad you will probably find that the front of the sill is in poor nick also.
Re: exactly what
I always under the impression it's two things:

One water from the windscreen wipers gets washed into this corner, it always tends to be the drivers side that rots more, and of course the wipers sweep to this side.

Rain, on both occasions the water gets trapped round the back of the pillar and the door rubber seal holds it against the metal of the underside of the pillar, thus, the water cannot escape.
