Lost reverse on auto box

#1 Post by anthony rld900r » Thu Mar 18, 2004 10:20 am

Help!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Reversing out this morning was fine, but 10 minutes later disappeared completely.

Still have forward gears and have also gained drive in neutral, (so I've now got a 4 speed auto box!!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> ) but no reaction to putting it into reverse and am unable to push the car back when in reverse.

Fluid levels checked and okay with engine running and warm and quite frankly, I'm baffled - could it be the selector rod as I've got drive in neutral?

Anyway, HELP!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Can you still start it when in what shows to be neutral or is it inhibited? If you can't start it I'd suggest your selector has loosened and moved. Is park where it should be? You should only be able to start the car in P or N.

Park is where it should be - haven't tried starting in neutral yet, but it stays in drive when I place it in neutral...

your linkage locking nuts have come loose?
there are locking nuts on the linkage for you to adjust it
for correct gear positions place the box into park after removing linkage from box and then put lever into park
and adjust the rod to fit etc...

Okay, it starts in Park or Neutral and wants to drive immediately in Neutral - but no bumps / thuds on start up in Neutral, compared to when you normally engage Drive.

Drives in 1, 2 and D, but when Reverse selected just sits there, neither will it move if physically pushed when running and in Reverse...

Park pawl works and prevents it rolling when hand brake off, engine on and in Park.

Haven't been able to get underneath yet to check the selector, but examination from the engine bay with torch suggests the clip is in place on the selector arm.

What position should the arm from the gearbox be in when in park, if I follow the advice so far?

Got me baffled, I can tell you <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">

the arm on the box should be right back towards the rear of the car

the only way of checking if the arm is in correct position is by disconecting it don't forget if it goes back futher than when you selected park then it's out of adjustment
if you intend to run the engine whilst checking it get one or all (lsd) wheels off ground

Lost reverse on auto box

Okay, finally got reverse back after 2 days of investigating. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Selector rod was a little out so took it off, cleaned all the grot off, found the lock nut was loose. Also found it didn't look like the one in the manual!!!

That didn't clear the problem so loked through everything else - book suggested front and rear band and finally seized front clutch <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

Found the inhibitor switch was covered in grot so took that off and cleaned everything, gained access to the front and rear band adjusters and did them for good luck and drained and refilled the gearbox for good luck

After a quick road test, got neutral back, then reverse after a short while later - can only attribute the problem to the bands and gearbox oil levels being corrected.

Phew, didn't fancy having to take the gearbox off for another
